Funny thing about these torque to yield bolts is that the FSM says you can measure them for reuse but machine shops recommend replacing at least the head bolts. When you plastigage the rod and main bearings you obviously have to install and remove to check so you are in essence stressing even a new bolt more than once. My machinist says when checking the bearings you should always check using the bolts you plan on using.

Thanks. The machine shop was very meticulous on that since we couldn’t get a Toyota part number for this. The Dorman plugs that were the closest did not fit so the machine shop had some that worked. They were also very meticulous about brushing the block out during cleaning.

I also noticed that the new rod bolts have a head that is beefier than the old bolts.
 
Just so you know, if you plan on using plastigage it does have a shelf life, and can give false readings. One should mic everything don't rely on plastigage. This is coming from someone who has built many engines and has been f'd because of plastigage, it was a costly mistake. Most machinist's that I've work with do not recommend plastigage as a method of measurement, only as a comparison between bearing journals, that you already know what the clearance is. When I assembly engines after torquing down each bearing cap rotate crank 1 or 2 times, this should feel smooth all the way around no tight spots. If you encounter a tight spot you must find out why or it can lead to premature bearing failure, you should always be able to spin crank by hand before head is installed. Enough typing just my .02. Sounds like a great build, and working with good people always helps. interested how it turns out good luck
 
Good advice. That’s the way we’re planning on building it. Everything is getting mic’d prior to assembly. Thanks for sharing about the plastigage, I wasn’t aware of the shelf life.

On a side note I met cruiserdan at the museum the other day. It was a pleasure to meet in person. He gave a great tour and was extremely nice. If you ever have a chance to go to the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum I highly recommend it!

Ordered some flow matched Denso 12 hole fuel injectors for better atomization and more accurate fuel delivery that arrived today. Plug and play fit!

Had the rod and main bearings mic’d today. Machinist commented that they were exactly the same size, better than typically measured, and perfect sizing for our polished crank.

Wiped the bores down with brake clean and coffee filters. Cleaned the main bearings, caps, & bolts. Plastigaged the mains and all within spec and very consistent.

Nice! just got all my parts back from the machine shop last week. About to go down the same road using the same bearings. Look forward to seeing your updates. I believe my machine shop replaced the two small plugs on the front of the block using made in house brass plugs. :meh:
