Yep the search is over, I scored a Silver 2007 Unicorn Land Cruiser w/Thunder Cloud trim and stone interior.
025.JPG

I started this hobby of restoring 100 series, after getting the bug! A bug perpetuated reading mud, as a distraction from the stress of trading oil futures contracts 23 hours a day. I'd already been a 100 series owner since 2004 (01 LC No Nav The King), and a wrencher since birth.

I then decided to find a high mileage minimally maintained 100 to see what it would take to bring back to near showroom ready (restore). I found the "WhiteLady" 01LX w/215K, bought it, went to work/play. While playing with it, needing a hood I searched the internet daily for months and months for paint matching hood. While searching I found a few others that turned into project like "Graybear" a 00LX w/274K. One rule I laid out from day one (only way girlfriend would tolerate) is hobby must pay for itself. Second was a goal to work my way up the food chain, one day getting a Unicorn to play with. Got it!

For those that don't know, all 2003-07 series 100 import through normal channels into the lower 48 states of the USA, came with the NAV optional system. With the NAV option also means, the climate controller is integrated into NAV.

Here's the Unicorn's climate control, which has had an aftermarket radio and backup camera installed. Notice the differences, like it has a fan control.

For comparison here is a typical 07 USA 100 series.

Can't tell you how excited I was to pull this off the auto transport with The King:
Book ends.jpg

Below you'll find what I did to bring this back to as close to factory spec as I reasonably could. Basically going through the Toyota recommended Preventive Maintenance (PM) from 0 - 120K miles. Replacing parts that are no longer serviceable according to Toyota Factory Service Manual (FSM).

Additionally; Correcting or improving issue that I've learned are best practice.
As example: Painting between #3 crossmember and frame. This is a rust location that can lead to a very expensive repair beyond the Toyota designed 25 year life.

Also doing extras.
This is replacing parts that are still serviable, but will fail or reduce driving experience now or in near future.
Example; Replacing front Drive shafts and hub flanges to get ahead of the game and yield a better driving experience.

Had this not pre-sold and I'd kept for myself as was intended, much of this would have been done over next 3 to 5 years as time and budget allowed.

I actually didn’t know I was buying a Unicorn when I made the offer. I was just buying a relatively low mile (~127K) with a blown engine to play with.

Being a 2007 makes it the rarest of all Unicorns (The Holy Grail) and the most sought after. Why, 2007 being the last year of the 100 series in the USA has a special interest to those wanting the final in a great line up. 2007 also had the fewest number imported into the USA of all 100 Series, make it most difficult to find.

First thing I did was a photo shoot of undercarriage, body and interior. I was amazed at how clean, especially the undercarriage of the Unicorn was. I suppose being a Unicorn extra special care was always taken with it by PO’s, that and fact it being a rig from the Southern states (GA & TX).

I really didn’t have time to do any work on The Unicorn. I was finishing up Snowy, which was my biggest restore to date with ~300 parts & 700 hours. It was under contract to a buyer from nearly the beginning and I had a schedule to meet, with order of the day being "10 year & 100K miles".
Scored a 06 LC (untouched Jewell restoration)

Snowy under front.JPG

Work other mud member's rigs came next:
When I finished with Snowy, I had some promises to keep working on a few local mud members rigs. You see a few locals had asked me to work on their rigs, offering to pay me. I was able to save one member of mud about $4K on an ABS job. I'd been finding the typical shop, including Dealer (Toyota/Lexus), were doing many job wrong, leading to more expensive future repairs. My hobby was turning into more of a business.

Then “The Black Knight” pop up on my radar, I had to have it. It was the cleanest I’d ever seen, even cleaner than the Unicorn or The King when I first bought them. So I made a very good offer for it, head to SoCA to close on the deal and drive it home. Even with its supper low mile and OMG clean, it needed some correcting and PM. With winter coming it move ahead of the Unicorn, so the Unicorn had to wait once again. I need more garage space with climate control, as winter was really going to slow me this year with so much on my plate.
Scored 2006 LC w/58K OMG Clean!

There is No vehicle I like driving more cross country than a Cruiser. But I had to have auto transport bring to me from GA, as it had a blown engine. I’ve my work cut out on the Unicron:

Wonder what the story is on that non nav rig. Had to be a slip up in the order. I don’t think the regions would allow a special order LC in those days.

After a great deal of work finding, buying, swapping parts and replacing/installing engine with a long block from a 06 GX470 with just under 100K miles on it. You can see and hear it running. As you read through the thread, you'll see all the parts that were needed to swap in a GX470 4.7L 2UZ-fe VVT into a 100 series (Land Cruiser or LX470 06-07).

Sounds good now!

I really can't say. But it's my understanding some No NAV were imported to Puerto Rico and Hawaii.

It has a 10/06 manufacturing date and is listed as a VX model.

1/19/08 The first history entry from Toyota.com is at Mike Calvert Toyota in Houston on 1/19/08 w/16,803 miles for a 15K service.

Carfax thanks to a certain member for getting to me fast, shows vehicle shipped & inspected to/at original dealer:
11/06/06 source NICB. Texas;Inspection Station Alvin, TX. Emissions inspection performed & Passed safety inspection.
11/30/06 Ron Carter Toyota Alvin, TX. Pre-delivery inspection completed.
12/14/06 SouthwestRe Houston, TX Reinsure.com Service contract issued.
1/09/07 Texas Motor Vehicle Dept. Houston, TX Title. First owner reported.

Second owner:
11/23/11 TX. Vehicle offered for sale. Fort Bend Toyota Sugar Land, TX
11/25/11 GA. Georgia Motor Vehicle Dept. Vehicle purchase reported. (sold very fast)

Carfax also showed and accident, which PO disclosed up front. He explained to me; a miniVan skinned his passage side while he continued with forward motion.
11/2/15 Minor damage reported. Airbags did not deploy. This is what I did most of my DD at first. When I found it had ~$10K in repairs I feaked and called the body shop. Shop manager remembered how clean it was. I was very concerned scanning the work order report, when I saw A, B and C pillar painting. I became very concerned pillars may have been damaged. I was relieved to find pillars had not been damaged at all. They're one of the top body shop in the South. They paint inside doors so that they don't leave paint lines. They did minor repair to front door skin and 1/4 panel on PS. They also replace rear PS door. Then paint PS side. I'm good with minor damage that is properly repaired. So I made my offer on the rig, still not knowing it was a Unicorn.

I hope to have as near showroom condition as your 2006 TBK. It's killing me waiting for weather to warm. I only get an hour or two occasionally now in the garage.

Draining Fuel from gas tank:
Draining fuel from gas tank by removed fuel pump, so I could get a look into gas tank and siphon out old fuel. I was concerned with age of old fuel and look (crudy) of gas cap area. So I wanted to inspect and put in fresh fuel with a stabilizer. With so much work to be done, I didn't want a potential bad fuel issue at first engine start up.

Pulling Engine:
I did manage to pull engine out yesterday after making use of the occasional hours of warm weather to perp. I had planned on pulling pan, but it took longer than it should have to pull. So I'll wait for next warm day.

This is back of the VVt engine, which has tubes coming from the exhaust headers going into the A.I. #1 & #2 switches. Switches connect to the rear water bypass joint.

So, Paul the $64,000 question is: Will you keep the Unicorn when she's all done???

I would really like to, it's why I sold The King. But it's become painfully clear I need a shop with lift and climate control. The right offer could get me what I need.

Like vs need.

The right offer will make decision for me.;):(:)

That's one way to get to the steering rack...

Great photos- dont often get to see this levelnof detail with motors pulled.

Thanks for posting.

I believe I saw that one when it was offered. If I had the room for another one, I would have tried to beat you to it. :)

That's what I was thinking. Be so easy.:hmm: I will be looking over that very closely, but so far I've no indication it needs a rack replacement or even mounting bushings.

Congrats on finding your unicorn. What a nice surprise.
Thank you, it was a very nice surprise.

Thanks! I have a bunch of pictures I'll be puttin up. I chose those to show parts we don't see everyday and how I did some stuff. Keep in mind it's a VVt so a few difference on engine.

BTW: One shop said "It's only a two hour job to pull" Man I'm I slow took me six months...LOL

That’s exactly what thought!
Yep my first thought as well.

If I've any doubt it well be considered.

No doubt you did, was a member of mud that post it up. I too didn't have room, especially for a no run condition with winter coming. I moved fast doing DD, making offer within two hour of listing. But still I was second in line.

Then too learn it's a Unicorn, WOW wow WOW

Even a blind squirrel gets lucky now and then!

Oh yeah I meant to ask if you pulled that motor solo.

Curious what futures trading software you use, I take it you work in risk mgmt?

Mark to market!

So just for clarity, you have no title? Or is the PO applying for a lost title and signing it over down when they get it?

So no Nav HVAC makes it the unicorn? It is very clean underneath. I thought I found a unicorn with my 2000 LC with only 109k miles.
