I had him check that the OD button wasn't pressed. One day it was fine, then it wasn't. Is this a known issue with the 2000? No wheeling. He recently bought the rig from the original owner and it was very well maintained and never wheeled.

It should have CEL- read the code.

Yes, ODB II reader. You should have a check engine light on. My 4th gear overdrive lock solenoid in the 80 didn't lock when over 60 mph, with a CEL and flashing O/D light on dash.

Buddy says no CEL on. Any other ideas?

Make sure engine & transmission are reaching full operating temp. I've never noticed this, but recently someone posted; transmission will stay in low gear until op temp reached.

Thanks. I'll pass that on to my friend. I haven't noticed that on my 99, but it may be the case on his 2000. Seems strange to me that no codes are throwing and problem just "appeared". My friend is baselining the truck and very thorough on his maintenance.

So I need to correct the thread title. Truck is a 98. Don't know if that changes the possible Dx.
I rode with him and truck at temp at 60mph was turning near 3000 rpm. No code our data showed on the OBD2. Any other thoughts?

I am assuming that you are trying to get get over 60mph and its not allowing you to do that. Cause the 3k rpm at 60mph sounds about right. I have a 2000 LC and notice that engine does need to get a little hot to get the transmission to shift smoothly. I noticed that for other toyota's as well.

So coolant is topped, reservoir at proper level, cabin air blew very hot and temp gauge centered, ok good!

Did you guy's press speed on up too 70 or 80 MPH, what happened?

So next, is OD button on shifter working properly. That is, he should see RPM change with change in the position of button instantly?

Is CDL off. Sometimes CDL light will be out, but wheel will bind on turns? Cycle the switch half a dozen or more times on dirty, snow or ice roads. Change direction of travel to disengage.

How's fluid in transmission, did this start after a full 12qt flush with what fluid? or has he done that yet?

What did he do on base line list or any work before this issue started?

Are all dash warning lights coming on during test cycle (when key first turned).

Thanks for all the replies and help with Dx. I'll make sure my buddy gets this after work today.

This is true I notice this when I dont warm up the car properly in a rush when cold .

OK, just got back from Diagnostic drive. Checked A/T fluid. Engine hot, idling fluid level reads high (above Hot notch). Here's where it gets interesting. Driving with NO LOAD on the tranny (down hill) engine will shift to 4th, and you can clearly see the jump in RPM when the O/D off switch is hit. But when drive at speed (50, 60, 70) it WILL NOT kick up to 4th. Does this point to a solenoid issue? Rigs runs and shifts smooth as butter otherwise. Thanks in advance for any further help.

A lot of unanswered question, but perhaps this will help:

Awesome thank you. Another friend said it could be caused by the overfilled transmission. He is doing a flush and refill today. We'll see if that solves it.

Thank You much for your help so far, hope to return the favor some day. Still no resolution and I'm hoping for more insight. I flushed the transmission at a Valvoline shop and upon doing so, the outgoing fluid appeared still a clean color and exhibited no bad smell, but still to no avail. Today, a local transmission shop test drobe the vehicle and used Snap-On's Solus diagnostic tool, determining that 4th is "commanded", but "not holding". He further advised that the next step would be to open up the pan and test the solenoid valve- overhaul would follow if internals appeared to warranted such a procedure. I've scheduled an appointment with a Toyota dealership to try their diagnostic check. Would the dealership determine any more than the local transmission specialist? I am tempted to open up the pan and inspect it myself. Is it true that if anything other than clean transmission fluid is present in the transmission an overhaul or replacement is necessary? Finally, if the transmission internals appear clean, is it al that terrible to run the vehicle for the long term? I am ever so grateful for additions insights. RPMs are running consistently as follows: 1450@30, 1850@40, 2500@55mph, 2800@60, 3200@70, 3800@80. I tend to stick to 60 to 65 tops on the freeway and this is a daily driver for hopefully no more than 6 to 8 months.

Dang. Was hoping you would get some definitive answers today. I'd recommend getting the Techstream done at Toyota. Did the tranny shop tell you where the "command" is coming from? Would the solenoid replacement fix that?

I believe the ECM was successfully commanded the valve to turn. I think this is a strong indicator that the TP Sensor is still good. Tech said he would still have to "test the solenoid valve". Hopefully that is the fix. Meanwhile, I google image search healthy transmission guts.

Update: Since completing the transmission flush I have changed the transfer case gear oil. Although the old oil resembled "butterscotch" accoring to a parts store rep who disposed of the gunk, the drain plug magnet revealed not more than two or three pieces of shavings no bigger than 1/64" or so in size. The transfer case may have much to do with the O/D issue, but nonethelessthe service was completed. Since then I've seen the tach drop, where for a moment it seems the transmission shifted into O/D from about This occurred at four or five separate times, at about 2150 to 2000 rpms, during gentle acceleration, at round 45 mph. But, although the revs dip for a moment, the tach climbs again to indicate rpms levels exactly as mentioned in my previous post. I believe that based on the described phenomena and that, as I understand it, partially bad solenoids may not throw codes, that replacing at least solenoid 1 and 2 is the solution. I also contemplate replacing all transmission solenoids with the Dacco brand solenoid package.

I've opted out of hiring our local Toyota dealership for diagnostics, as my cynicism grows with every engagement.

Has anyone experienced similar tach and O/D symptoms? Have you found that solenoid replacement was the solution? Was there another fix? Is Densi the better choice of solenoid manufacturer? Does any one consider Dacco reputable?

Thank You

Curious on your outcome as this just happened to me today. Toyota remanufactured transmission with less than 8k on it. Hate to think it's the solenoids already, since I installed the trans and not sure how that works with warranty. Keep us posted.
