But seriously I have been carrying old shopping bags for three decades (And I grow up on a "Third world country", just like doggie poop bags, so easy, so clean, no excuses..

Not trying t be gross or anything, is just a human fact..

Before leaving home I will make a few baggies ( more than the days plan since I pretty much I always end up in a "Walk about"

So, plastic bag from the super market, and baby wipes, roll a few of them together and then roll the bag like a cigarette, they are super small (no air inside) and airtight by the time you are done.

Then when you need it, you do like a doggie bag and stick you hand into it, when you are done flip it inside out and tight a knot, I always attach them to the rack of my motorcycle and when to got into a town (when I did not have a town to go to, just dig a hole as close as possible to a tree since "Guano" is the best fertilizer ever (left the wipes to, sorry about that one) and take the plastic bags with me.

Hah I've been there as well, what a mess. Must be the most holy and the most polluted river at the same time.
Lets not even go there, That class stratification sucks..

Specially since the upper class is silly educated and so freaking rich, Oxford, sorbonne, harvard, many times all of them combine..

Education is suppose to make you "more aware of the world", i have no idea how they sleep at night..
 
Tent and Kayak? No problem! Bikes on the hitch mount and a warm, quiet, comfortable bed for 2-3 people.

So your roof bars are really wide and that is how you can fit the toys..??

I better not talk too much, my MOAB basket is really loud and is going to be louder when I install the led light bar..

I'm 6'2" and I still have problems reaching the bags on the basket (I put some tires up there the other day (that was really stupid)

The bike rack end up been for posing too, just playing "Cirque do soleil" standing on the rear tire is a little much for my back..

We have a tandem mount but is so new and nice I only install it when we are going to ride it that is why the bike rack is so far away from the basket (11" to be exact)..

I implement this little trick on the outback and diminish the noise drastically (even without a spoiler)

Notice how the bars are installed on top of the basket, yes you lose basket capacity plus they mounts are "Hanging" instead of resting on the tubes, but so far no problems after a year of carrying heavy plywood and a bunch of other crap.

Sadly the roof of "Polar Bear" is far to convex so the bottom of the basket hits the roof with the stock mounts flip upside down, so I order ten really cheap bicycle downhill stems from China (I will never install on of this on a bicycle, scary stuff but I'm sure they will work great for the moab basket, free delivery but is taking forever (5 weeks to be exact)

Actually I have been looking on Ebay (and collecting some cheap Yakima bike trays) to get some 80/20 extrusion so I can make a really flat/low/rigid and full length platform, then with a quick release pin system I can install whatever attachment I need, the basket is just useless so high up..
 
Only issue with RTT is inability to leave camp without dropping the tent. Sometimes, it is nice to be able to leave your tent up with all the stuff in it and go for a short drive.

Really...

Maybe I just look "Mean" (I'm big but total Teddy Bear for the most part) but I (we) have left the tent and gear (Street/freeway heavy jackets, pants, bigger tent, thermarest, etc) up for days when we go motorcycle/bicycle riding in tight trails/single track without ever losing anything.

At least 300 days total (actually much more) in 20 years, in the US and canada and even in baja in the old days, I will not camp there today even with a Centry Gatling gun, so sad it was so awesome for so many years.

Actually maybe a pair of this kind of boots sticking from the tent will be even more effective..

I think he meant drive the vehicle that the tent is attached to. Not much of a problem with a hardshell. I use a power drill to raise and lower the tent. 5-10 minutes at the most and sleeping bags/pillows stay inside.

Well, with the Maggiolina it is down in 1 minute or maybe 2 minutes, and you leave all the sleeping stuff inside. So you can just do a trip or 4x4 track and return, barely costing any extra time.


On top of that, I once had a slightly unsafe situation at night, and we decided to take of the ladder, throw it in the car. Then we just drove off with the Maggiolina tent standing up right. Yes the car is much higher in that case. But other then that, it doesn't matter. We drove one or two kilometer and then put the Maggiolina down and drove on to find a safe place.

The one side hinge I get, but I will love to see how the parallelogram can stand the force of the wind when the truck is in motion, insane..

In that Case a Canvas/pole tent will be gone in a second, or at least kattywompus forever..
 
In my own little weird opinion if you are going to carry around such a Big A^^ tent, may as well "carried on the Inside"..

Hey anybody ever made the commitment to actually cutting a hole on the ceiling of their truck (any vehicle) so they can get in and out the tent without getting outside..??

The weatherproof seal will need to be massive, space station big..

Off the floor and still have a car to drive, what I don't want to do is to spend hours trying to field a very flat terrain or adjusting each of the legs..

Anyway if it would be a real life or death situation, just floor it, because the rooftent is not important then.

But about the wind, they can handle so much wind it is incredible. We were in Nepal, and we were surprised by a storm. Lot's of rain and wind.
There was not enough time to get the tent down, the wind came up really fast! Almost instantly the storm was there. It was a bit mountaines area near Pokhara.
When the Maggiolina is upright, it is really strong. But when you're taking it down, it is sloppy in the process and all over the place. This means we didn't want to take it down because the wind would do a lot of damage if it's weak like that.

So it was standing upright and taking a beating of the wind. The whole Landcruiser was moving left to right, but the Maggiolina didn't care. It didn't move (apart from the car moving).

But since it was also like a monsoon rain, we didn't keep it dry :hillbilly:

let's say that my trips to the Darien where not with the smurfs and from this people I learn many things that save my bumbum a few times living in Colombia..

First of all you have absolutely no tactical advantage in a RRT, when trouble comes things happen way to fast, unless you have a direct path for the driver (and everybody that is up there into the steering wheel) you better surrender..

You can always take some simple precautions

*Always park downhill and on the straightest path possible (parking uphill still better than doing a U-turn since you flanks are more unprotected) Engine block in the front, the back of at least one set of seats if is the back.

* set camp on the most open space you can find, so you have a full range of scanning, today you can install proximity sensors, 20 years ago 3 hours turn rotation.

*lights specially if trigger with motion, figures moving like on "Home alone" activity (wind power, amplified shadows whatever it takes), well you get the idea.

*Always park in a Advantageous position, top of a hill are best unless is only one road to get down, creeks, ravines, small V shape formations, shock holds, busy single track trails, roads, are horrible.

*"No de Papaya"and "No de Boleta" this are actually a Colombian term used worldwide by the hard core RTW motorcycle community, and it has many connotations, for example don't show up on a little town somewhere on your bling out monster truck with a million lights/tents, gas can specially (they make for great fireworks and disable you escape immediately, also no sugar in them) on it, attracting attention is the last thing you want

Then don't ever show any of your "Toys" big muscles, army tattoos, any army, also you don't need to be violent, just state a image of "Don't mess with texas" (I study advance Semiotics, this topic is far and wide) most of their "equipment" will be short range and they may not have a "cheytac" but they always have a cousin pedro with a "Brazo" (A "Arm" to reach you) but if they deam you trouble they just take you down from a block away, no questions ask..

Many more, I just don't want to get to creepy..

Your tent..

Well sounds very strong, but maybe they need to make the "Colombia" now Mehico tent I guess, specially a "Emergency ejection procedure. No..!! Ladders are No bueno, specially if somebody is scarce, stumble, freeze, etc.

Maybe some kind of break away poles (different/replaceable "Fuses" depending on wind but collapsible for sure if the trucks gets going), articulations on the middle of the pole so it can be retract it electrically, even a small rope to the driver seat can pull up a pair of pins..

In any case dragging such a big structure if you need to get away fast is not a good idea (Is to visible, but still need to be white or even better silver do to sun heat reflection) personally I will rig my tent to be lock up to the rack when the vehicle is running then automatically release the attachment points when is open (simple electrical solenoid)

That way the tent will just fall of the truck, hey maybe you get lucky and they leave it there until the sun light, but losing a tent as expensive as it may be is nothing compare with real safety..

No Idea why I'm giving you this tips companies paid a lot of money for this kind of "Ideas"

No, to be more serious, Asia can be dangerous to. The whole incident I described happened in India too. It was just the local nutcase who was climbing up the ladder. Then I told him to get down, and he listened. But didn't feel comfortable, so we just drove away. But that was some guy who was a bit crazy, not 100% okay. So that makes it unpredictable.

However, travelling in countries like Colombia must be different, because of high crime rates.

Most countries in Asia have a very low crime rate. But countries like Pakistan, your travelling great parts by using police escort..
That is not because of crime, but you can be a target to be taken hostage by some group, trying to get something done from there government. For example, Baluchistan guys who want to be independent.

Anyway, I like your tips. We always parked in such a way that we could just drive off immediatly without U-turn. Those kind of basic things. And the old BJ45 landcruiser is well suited to push some guys away, because of the steel bumpers.
But things like parking at a high point, or at an open area... usually in Asia it is safe enough so you don't have to do those kind of things. And secondly, those places suck :D of course safety is most important, but usually those kind of places are very windy and cold. Also, in the upper half of India, such a place would mean everybody can see you are there. Because it is just very hard to be on an open place like that and not have people moving around.
