So a friend of mine emailed me this photo today. It was taken almost 10 years ago (10 years this coming October) when we moved my tipi.

I was living in a tipi while finishing up my last year of school in Durango, Colorado. Everything I owned was in or on that 45LV including the tipi. Actually, the old Series I Land Rover 107" pickup in the background is mine and I had a few things stashed in there. Still own the old Rover but not the 45LV

Some good times.

Hey Merbesfield: Sell me my old LV back why don't ya!!?:flipoff2: I want it back.

At least you were smart enough to keep the LR!! There are lots of LV's in the FJ45 Classified section:steer:--all you need is the tipi for the roof.

You are right about that. I need to pull the old LR out of storage and get it going again. Bikerso: That's the Series I (the ony Land Rover I have left)that I told you about when we discussed your 45 build on the phone today.

Merbesfield sent me a few pics of my old LV awhile ago. It's in pretty sad shape but I think it would be kind of neat to have it back. One of those full circle things.... like what happened to my old/new FJ55.

did you say tipi?! cool pic john! :)

Yep, lived in that tipi for about 10 months and through a pretty harsh winter. My girlfriend, now wife, moved into the tipi with me in the dead of winter after her condo burned down. I thought this was one really cool chick to go from a plush condo to a tipi!

Of course I sold the tipi and upgraded to a school bus after I graduated college. The girlfriend lived in the bus for a summer while I worked in the desert. The bus was plush but not as cool as the tipi. Now, there is a hippie for ya!!!!

Nice pic of the 80 with tipi poles. I'm thinking of getting another tipi so maybe I'll take an updated picture of my current Cruiser with the tipi poles on it.

Great pics and story to boot!

What is the story about the 45?
How did you acquire it?

I am luvin' the Westfalias helping out @ move time.
I was the local VW mechanic @ the university I attended and drove a Thing for about 3 years.

Great in the Summer, cold in the Winter, but still always started

Hippies rule, yuppies drool.......;)

Thanks Redcorn.
Let's see...... the 45. Well, I was driving an old Rover (Series IIA 88") before I bought the LV. I went home to see my family in Tulsa, OK for Christmas and drove the Rover. It was 900 miles and a very long trip going 50mph.
I got to Tulsa fine but the next morning I went to drive over to my Dad's house and I lost 2nd and 3rd gears in the tranny. This old Rover was not going back to Durango with me.

My Dad lent me his truck to drive around Tulsa on Christmas break. He also set me up on a blind date with a girl from Honduras. She lived with some friends of his and worked as their kids' nanny. She had just arrived from Honduras and did not speak much English. Since I am fluent in Spanish, my dad and his friends thought it would be a great idea for me to show her around. Anyways, we went out and when I took her back home, I spotted this weird looking Cruiser parked a few doors down from where she lived.

After I dropped her off, I went back and had a closer look at the Cruiser. I saw that it was an LV and that it had a a for sale sign in it. The next morning I called about it and took it for a test drive. The owner said that he inherited it from his uncle who had just died. His uncle used it at his lake house to tow his boat to the docks. I bought it took it home. I did a complete tune up, changed all the fluids and set out for my 900+ mile trip back to Durango.

I drove it for about a year and then sold it because I had finished my FJ55 project. It was a cool LV and I got a lot of looks and compliments about it. I basically did nothing to it except drive it. I worked in Moab, Utah for a few summers and I had the LV in Moab for one summer. I worked out in the field and when I came back I found a ton of notes on it asking me to sell it. I guess a fellow Cruiserhead had spotted it during Cruise Moab and decided to tell everyone about it.

A few years ago, I was surfing the web and came across Treeroot's website. I saw my old LV and saw that it belonged to Merbesfield here on the board. It looks pretty rusty compared to when I had it. It would be kind of neat to get it back and restore it but not sure if I want to do that yet.

The Westy's belonged to some friends of mine. The yellow one belonged to my room mate. He lived in the tipi with me. The tipi was great for 2 people but when my girlfriend moved in, it was a little tight. The tipi was a 25 footer and we had it set up really nice. 2 beds, kitchen, couch, and a woodstove.

The red Westy belonged to a good friend of my room mate. He had driven out from Massachusetts and stayed with us for about 6 weeks. He's the one that sent me the picture.

Yep, hippies rule. Even though I cut off all my hair and have less facial hair these days, I'm still a hippie at heart.

You should buy the LV back and fix it up for the wife as an everyday driver. Add to the cruiser memories--who know you could even teach your daughter to drive in it someday.

Dude, your my hero,

a tipi to a wife to a bus :grinpimp:

Are you talking about this one?
Merbersfield's '65

If so I'll have to ask Eugene how he got it.

Yep, that's the one. It does not look as nice as when I had it. It's ready for a restoration and to be put back on the road.

Chicks dig guys in tipis. ;) I loved living in that tipi. It was so simple.... easy and carefree living. I did not have to worry about bills or all that other BS. The only things that concerned me were keeping warm, keeping the animals out of my food, and keeping the Beer from freezing. Life was pretty simple.

Also, that was the first and only winter I never got sick. Not one sniffle or sneeze that entire winter. I think it was the fact that I was outside braving the elements.

The more I write about this, the more I am really considering getting another tipi. I would love to have it setup in the mountains and be able to go to it to get away on the weekends. Not that my life is stressful but it would be nice to get away and able to rough it for awhile. A person needs that every once in awhile. I would also love for my daughter to have that experience as well. Fawk it, I'm doing it!

That sounds like a good plan. The problem is that I just bought my old FJ55 back to do that. My 55 has a lot of sentimental value as my Dad and I fixed it up for quite a few years. I sold it and my father died a few years later. I just bought the 55 back about a year ago and am in the process of finishing what my Dad and I started.

I guess I could restore the LV after the 55. I could have 2 sentimental trucks. One for the wife and the other for me. Then there is my old Rover that I drove in college. I need to buy that one back to restore for my daughter. Oh wait, then there's that old M37 Power Wagon. Oh man, will it ever stop!!!!? Seriously though, it would be nice to have that old LV back. I'm quite jealous seeing these LV's being restored and I don't have one anymore.

Oh well. The LV will come back to me if it is meant to be. Hippie enough for ya:flipoff2:

Yes I still have the 65. I bought it with a 66 and decided to resto the 66. It does need work for sure, but it will be for sale as I only kept it in case I forgot where a part went ;) It is very complete though except for the front seats. Looks like the drivers door did not close well back then either?

May I ask for first dibs on the 45LV when you put it up for sale? Not that I need another Cruiser project but it may be kind of fun to have it back.

The front seats were some lime green bucket seat out of a Buick or maybe Pontiac. They were fugly but not too bad comfort wise.

Yep, the owner before me had installed latches from a hardware store. Not sure what to call them but the latches that slide with a bolt. If you did not latch these, the doors would not stay closed at all.

One of the reasons I sold the LV was there not such a great Land Cruiser community back when I owned it. There was the LCML but I was not really that active on it. I know the LV needed more care and money than I could give it and I was a little scared about finding or making parts for it. I was hoping I could pass it on to someone who could take better care of it than I could have.

Maybe it's time for me to be that someone who brings it back to life???????
