What is the best brand of cold air intakes out there for the FJ?

campatible with my TRD exhaust, which brand?

We got the TRD intake and it works, installs and fits great ! We have not dyno'ed to see the increase on HP but we can feel the mid and high range picked up alot. Our FJ came with the TRD exhaust.

Yeah I sort of leaning towards TRD intake but K&N is also on my mind..

K& N did not work for me on my Dakota.

I had a K&N on a 97 Dodge Dakota with the old 318 V8 in it and it did not hold up. After 10K or so the intakes cracked at the throttle body intake.
I had to replace it twice for the problem. I also had a problem with the filter wanting to vibrate loose. On the third and final intake I used an epoxy resin to fill the cracks and that fixed the problem.
To secure the filter, I finally installed a long AL spike through the rubber base of the filter though 2 drilled holes on the filter end of the intake to help the SS clamp hold the filter in place.
Granted the 318 is not as smooth as the FJ V6, but the materials should have lasted for the application for which they were designed.
The folks at K&N were nice enough and they did replace the intake tubes under warranty; but it was still a pain in the ass and the engine did get exposed to some unnecessary dusting as a result.
I am considering one but it will probably be a TRD product. It will definitely have an aluminum intake not plastic like the K&N product was on my Dodge.
I would also want the filter to be connected by more than a large SS adjustable band clamp!!
I ran the K&N for about 75K of the 150K that I owned the truck for.
It was a great looking truck, but its reliabilty was a true disappointment.
The engine and trans were the strongest part of the Dakota; everything else failed way more than it should have.
I will never own another Dodge or a K&N intake as a result of my experience......gm

Toyota probably sends you coupons for their "Parts Botique" - about every 2 monthe I get 1 for 20% off any purchase. That reduced the $400 ticket for the TRD CAI to $320 - best price around. I installed mine in about 45 minutes, and the fit was easy except for the box was not square relative to the top access panel - I had to force it to seat using the install screws (its going back to the stealer). The result combined with a Magnaflow muffler was significant in throttle response and mpg increase. My highway mileage went from a high of mid 16's to 20.

I also picked the TRD because of my concern for warrenty and state emissions testing. The other benefit was fit and all aspects worked great and I get no flak from the Toyada dealer on modifications. These points may have merit to some but not all.

Hey thanks for the detail on your experience with K&N it helps my mind on my decision...

Thanks alot for your input fellas it helps alot..I'm leaning alot with staying with Toyota's products because of warranty issues..Does any one know specificly how much HP is added with the TRD exhaust and TRD CAI combonation?

I cant see the reasoning of putting a CAI on an offroad vehicle.
I think a snorkle would make more sense.

Rushfan, my FJ is on the road as a daily work rig 95% of the time and offf road when I have time. The response of TRD's CAI is very impressive. And I love the howl as my right foot gets heavy!

I see another option that looks good too in the new issue of Four Wheeler. Advanced Flow Engineering PN 54-81162. Says 13 hp increase and 21 lb. torque increase. Looks like the TRD but no mention of pricing . www.afefilters.com

AFE manufactures for TRD, which is why they look alike. AFE has a second low opening in the box in the engine compartment, TRD does not. AFE was priced about $365, IIRC, TRD lists at $399.

that second low opening has turned me off of the AFE product, i wheel, and i cross water. i'm still waiting for a snorkel to come out, i heard ARB was making one, any word on this? ideally a TRD intake piped to a Snorkel would be great for me.

TRD

TRD for me. Nice sound, more punch, warranty coverage. Win, win, win.

I agree CAI with snorkle would be perfect, but until then I added the TRD CAI, no test, closest dyno is 400 miles away. I will say that I can climb a sand hill in third now where I use to not make it in second.(MT)

So you gain a significant power flow? How much do you think? with the TRD CIA..

I'd think a CAI would make it impossible to also do a snorkel. They are somewhat contradictory to each other. One tires to keep water out of the intake and keep it above water; which requires tight seals. The other generally tries to be more open and closer to the ground to allow more and colder air in.
