I have a 1979 BJ40 and the starter died on me. Are the B & 3B starters the same? Or can someone direct me to a place that can fix my old one or has a new or used one? I'm in Washington State, I took it to a starter repair shop & thier books don't even show them.

Thanks

Chances are the solenoid contacts are bad. Take apart the solenoid and see if the "L" shaped copper contacts are worn and if so replace those, you'll also want to check the plunger while you're in there. If you take those into the local NAPA or other auto parts shop and don't tell them where they're from they probably have them in stock!!

The starter actually shorted out on the inside, This rig came from costa rica. Someone soldered the hot wire on the outside of the starter which blackened the wire on the inside and eventually it shorted it out. Now its looking like the coil is bad . Still need more advise..

Thanks

Normaly since you have a '79 BJ40 with the later B engine it should have the same starter as a BJ42 and even the BJ70's with the 3B in it

Check out this post https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/236917-bj40-starter-problems.html I have a 79 BJ 40 and am having problems with my starter as well. If you need parts there are many places that carry contacts and plungers, I got mine from cruiserparts.net. Since my problem is more than just contacts I will probably send the starter to Cruiserparts since they are somewhat local for me. Steven at EBI Cruiserparts is a great resource and is in BC Canada. He can repair the starter for you if you cannot find anyone more local. His number is (877) 299-3540. Post pictures of the inside of your starter if you can on the thread I started. It would be nice to compare and help others with similar problems. Also download the BJ40 FSM from the sticky at the top of the diesel page. It has diagrams of all the starter components and other comprehensive data you will need for your BJ. Good luck.
