Looking for a known-good OEM Toyota/Denso igniter, Toyota part #89620-60060, for the electronic ignition setup currently installed on my FJ40.

The complete coil/igniter assembly is Toyota 19070-61060. My igniter is marked:

  • Toyota 89620-60060
  • Denso/Nippondenso 131100-2324

The coil paired with it is Toyota 90919-02113 / Nippondenso 029700-4920.

I’ve been chasing an intermittent crank/no-start condition. When it fails, there is no spark from the coil. I installed a new genuine Toyota coil and the problem remained intermittent.

We were able to catch it while it was actually in the no-start condition and test it:

  • Battery: 12.7V
  • Coil +: 12.26V key ON
  • Coil +: 10.87V while cranking
  • Distributor pickup resistance: ~276.6Ω
  • Pickup air gap: ~.008”
  • Distributor pickup generated .124V AC while cranking during the no-start
  • Igniter has a good ground (~.2Ω)
  • Coil negative does not pulse/switch while cranking
  • No spark from coil

Interestingly, after working around the connections/distributor previously, the truck started normally twice, then later returned to the exact same no-spark condition. So the igniter appears to be failing intermittently.

Toyota has discontinued 89620-60060, and the dealer listings I’ve tried so far have turned out to have no actual inventory.

Does anyone have a known-good 89620-60060 igniter they’d be willing to sell? I’d also be interested in a known-good complete 19070-61060 assembly, or recommendations for someone who can rebuild/test my original igniter.

I’d prefer OEM Toyota/Denso rather than converting the ignition system if possible.

Thanks!

You didn't mention your year, but I had that oem 89620-60060 igniter, with matching coil and distributor setup on my 79 while attempting to troubleshoot weird ignition issues.

I found the FSM very helpful in the process. It identified a failed test of the igniter and the pickup. I also identified a wobble in the small cap oem electronic distributor, so I opted to upgrade the ignition system to the FJ60 igniter (19070-61060) /coil, big cap distributor and dented pushrod cover. FYI, that upgrade also required a yazaki in-harness resistor wire delete.

Getting back to your current issue, intermittent failures in electronics are typically symptoms of a component overheating, or much more common, of an intermittent connection somewhere.

I would suggest two things before giving up on your stock setup:

- Clean all ignition-related electrical connections and grounds throughly, with sandpaper, vinegar, then apply dielectric grease. Also, pay particular attention to wire connections inside each terminal. The wire may seem attached, but may be broken or corroded inside. Wiggle and pull just to make sure.

- Go through all the tests prescribed in the FSM for each component. Although a bit tedious, the FSM steps are really well presented and precise. You can quickly determine if you have a component issue.

- With those tests done, you might also pop the top on your current igniter and have a close look for any cold solder joints, loose wires or burned components.

- If you determine your igniter is bad, there is an internal diagram/schematic that someone here created that may help you or someone else figure out how it works for troubleshooting purposes.

But, if you opt to upgrade to the FJ60 igniter, you will need to rewire your igniter connections as the wiring is slightly different, and probably delete or bypass your in-harness yazaki resistor wire to get a full 12v to your upgraded igniter.

Good luck!
