Well, I didn't really think I'd ever write this post.

I've owned this FJ40 for a long time and have had a build thread here on MUD going all the way back to 2010. I've built it, driven it, wheeled it, moved away from it, stored it, come back to it, and recently started trying to get it sorted again.

I've finally reached the point where I think it's time for someone else to take it from here.

I'm genuinely a little sad to let it go, but these days my 5th-gen 4Runner is becoming our family adventure rig, and that's where my time and energy are going. The FJ40 deserves better than continuing to sit in my driveway waiting for me to find time for it.

Nothing on this Cruiser is perfect. It is not a restoration, not an original collector truck, and not currently a turn-key driver. It's an old, modified, documented FJ40 project that I think could make a really good rig for somebody with more time and energy than I have for it now.

The Cruiser​

• Original-style steel soft-top bows modified to work with the Aqualu tub
• Bimini top included — worse for wear, but it's there

The old full soft top is not included. It eventually deteriorated/disintegrated and was discarded.

New Parts / Spares Included​

I also have a new, uninstalled JT Outfitters disc-brake conversion kit that I bought about a year ago and never got around to installing.

The sale also includes four bins of accumulated FJ40 parts I've collected over the years. There are various removed/original components, spares and miscellaneous Cruiser pieces in them.

I'm not going to inventory and photograph every nut, bolt and part in four bins. They go with the truck.

The previous points-style distributor is also included.

Long-Term MUD Build Thread​

One advantage to this truck is that its history isn't a complete mystery.

The thread documents quite a bit of the build, modifications, troubleshooting and actual use of the Cruiser over the years. If you're seriously interested, I'd encourage you to go through it. It probably tells the story of this truck better than I can fit into one classified ad.

Why It Sat​

The FJ40 was a running and driving truck and was wheeled and enjoyed before it went into long-term storage.

My family and I moved to Florida for about seven years. We lived in an HOA and I had nowhere appropriate to keep what, to an HOA, looked like an unfinished project vehicle even though it was running.

So the Cruiser stayed at my parents' place.

My dad drove it a few times during the first couple of years, but eventually it ended up sitting under a pole barn for several years.

And sitting wasn't kind to it.

The dirt daubers apparently considered an FJ40 prime real estate and built nests in just about every crevice they could find. Since getting the truck back I've been working through the sorts of issues you'd expect after an old carbureted vehicle sits for years.

Current Mechanical Condition​

The Cruiser starts and runs, but it does not currently run correctly.

It has a rough-running/misfire condition that I have not completely diagnosed.

The carburetor has been removed, completely disassembled and run through an ultrasonic cleaner twice. I've also recently been working through the charging and ignition systems. It has a recently replaced alternator and currently retains its externally regulated charging setup.

The DUI/HEI distributor remains installed.

I'm deliberately not going to write "probably just needs a carb adjustment," "probably plugs," or "easy fix."

I don't know.

It ran very well before its years in storage. It starts and runs now, but it doesn't run right, and that's exactly how I'm representing it.

A buyer should approach this as a running project that needs mechanical sorting, not something they're going to fly in and drive 500 miles home.

Body / Frame / Interior​

The truck has an Aqualu 3/4 aluminum tub, so obviously this isn't being sold as an original-body restoration candidate. The truck was built to be used.

The steel chassis shows age and surface corrosion. I'm providing detailed photographs of the underside and frame rather than trying to make claims from a sales ad. Look at the pictures, come inspect it, and decide for yourself.

I'm happy to take reasonable additional photographs of specific areas for someone seriously interested.

The interior is similarly functional but unfinished. Again, nothing is perfect. There are old modifications, worn pieces, unfinished areas and things the next owner will want to improve.

I'm not going to paint over things, detail the underside to death or otherwise try to make a project look like something it isn't.

Why I'm Selling​

This is probably the hardest part for me.

I've had this Cruiser for years and always pictured eventually getting everything exactly where I wanted it. Life changes, though.

I've got a family now, the kids are getting older, and the 5th-gen 4Runner is becoming our family adventure vehicle. That's the rig I'm putting my effort into, and realistically I don't have the time or energy to give both vehicles what they deserve.

I'm tired of watching the FJ40 sit.

So rather than letting another few years go by, I think it's time to hand it off to somebody who looks at it and sees their next project.

I'd particularly like to see it go to another Land Cruiser enthusiast, which is why MUD gets first shot at it.
