This is pretty cool. Anyone test it out for light output and run time? Since I don't smoke, this would be perfect in the cig lighter.

Review

Spec:
  • Nichia LED
  • four 20H roundcell Ni-MH (4.8V 20mAh, 14 hrs at 2mA)
  • recharged up to 1000 times
  • up to 5 hours to fully recharge
  • last up to 2 hours

The light came in a nice gift box that is suitable for presentation. The included instruction were in German and English, and indicated the light was made by Zweibrüder Optoelectronics in Germany and marketed by Coast Cutlery in the US.

The light is turned on by twisting the light head loose about 1/8 turn. To charge the battery, the entire light body is placed inside of a standard cigarette lighter socket with only the light head sticking out. It has an adapter ring for larger cigarette lighter sockets. When charging, the lens glows a faint blue light that is very dim and does not distract from the dark vehicle interior.

The light body is made from a solid piece of aluminum and has a solid and heavy feel to it. The lens is large dome shaped with sharply focused light output. The light output is very white and is similar to a Inova X1 and is sufficient for changing a spare tire in the dark or map reading in a vehicle. It is small enough that it can be held in the mouth to free up both hands to perform other tasks.

The only drawback of the light is the round light head. An angular light head would make it easier to turn the light on with gloved hands. An angular head is also less prone to roll off of an inclined surface.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this LED light. It is small, unobtrusive, and stays charged in the vehicle’s lighter socket. At less than $15 delivered, I ordered a few extras to give away.

Here are some pictures.

How long does the light last off a charge?

Light Test

I charged 2 LED units overnight just to make sure the batteries are topped off for the test. One unit was used for longivity test while the other was used as "control" as a comparison to the test unit at 15 minutes time intervals.

15 minutes - 100% compared to control LED unit with no noticable difference
30 minutes - 98% compared to control LED unit

Lights off for 2 hours the battery to recover.

45 minutes - 50% compared to control LED unit
60 minutes - 25% compared to control LED unit

Note that unit still glows with some usable light as a keylight after 3 hours. I was impressed with the endurance of the battery.

i am very happy with mine as well, bought it locally at batteries plus for under $20.

p.s. maybe not at walmart and maybe not $10, but my prediction was pretty good eh?:grinpimp:

You were close ;) I'll post up my review of the $10 Chinese copies later. The Coast Auto Lenser LED is made in Germany with real Nichia LED.

Here is a update of the "other" el cheapo LED light I bought from eBay. I was pleasently surprised by its performance. Read on...

I bought two units, a silver (chrome?) and a blue one on eBay and the LED light came in plastic-cardboard packaging that looked like normal Walmart items hanging on a peg-hook. Once removed from the packaging, the item felt even less substantial. It was made of all plastic parts with a metal lining on the body. The lens was made of a lightweight plastic and convexed outward, protruding from the body (bad). The unit turned on and off by pulling on the head. (good) the light does not roll around because it is weighed on one side with a magnet (good, neat feature). The magnet is strong enough to hold the LED light on its side (really good) and ensure a good contact inside a cigeretted lighter socket (excellent)

The unit glows green to indicate that it is chargine, but the green LED turns off after a few seconds (not good).

The back of the packaging has a bunch of warning and messages pretaining to its use (not water proof, don't open, etc) with miss-spelled words typical of a low-priced foreign good. The package indicated the "Car Searchligh" product was made in Taiwan. There were no specifications on the LED, battery type. The seller included some mediocre instruction that indicated the unit should be charged 1/5 hours before first use. He also indicated in his eBay listings that the battery was of the type "Nickel Hydrogen?". I elected to charge both units overnight just be sure.

The output of the light is about 60-70% of the light from the Lenser LED listed above.

Here is the performance test.

At the 1/5 hour mark, I stop the comparison with the Lenser LED due to the Lenser having almost no light (5%).

Here is the light output of the test LED compared to a controll (fully charged) LED light.
16 minutes: 100%
38 minutes: 95% and started to flicker. Turning the unit off and back of solved the problem
60 minutes: 90%
89 minutes: 85%
103 minutes: 80%
119 minutes: 50%
124 minutes: 30%
138 minutes: 20%
247 minutes: 5%

Holy smokes, This unit has two hour of really usable light and still glowing after 4 hours!

It cost $10 and I think it's a real winner if you can get over the cheap look/feel of the light.

hey theres the $10 light !!!

great review man,,, i like the magnet feature and longevity, but i prefer the lumens for something like this so lenser is the way to go for me, besides it is a cool conversation piece with the impressive build quality.

Great review!!!

Reminds me of Flashlight Reviews web site by how in depth your write up is. Awesome!!

These could be a great gift friends, family and so on.

UPDATE: Lenser does not work well in my LX.

The Lenser LED light would not make full contact in the LX cig outlet. The LED with the magnet in it aways charges properly in every cig lighter plug I've tried.
