So after driving around with 4.88's I now find my EMS exhaust a bit louder than before. Highway driving especially bad around 3200 rpms. This is not an anti EMS thread, please don't make it one. I did change the aero muffler out for a Magnaflow so that's what I'm running now. As I wasn't sure what I needed I picked up two resonators off of summit. A hushpower http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLO-12512400/ and a Moroso spiral flow http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MOR-94054/.

Does anyone have experience with either of these? The hushpower has a grate/mesh fill whereas the Moroso has an open center with a spiral/screw like outer shell which splits the exhaust in two. From what I read the Moroso works pretty well but I was looking for some real world experience with either. I would like some sound but the drone has go to go! Thanks for any input you may have,

Some more pics of where it's going to be installed

You've spent more on your exhaust than I've spent on two of my trucks. I envy you, rock on. I think th Moroso is pretty good with the drone, Ive used them twice in V8 applications.

I installed a Vibrant resonator in the same spot as you and it helped quite a bit.

But since you have two resonators that you've already bought, and you have to cut the pipe to install either of them, why not just try them both and keep the one you like best?

Well I could, but then I would have to tig one in then grind it off and tig in the other, and maybe going that one off and tig the first back in. I suppose a few tack welds would suffice for testing. Doesn't matter which one I guess. Either will help, just thought I'd put it out there.

I think I'm gonna go with the moroso, it feels really solid. thanks for the replies guys.

I love the sound of creepersleeper's VW resonator. Search around for the model.

Post up some audio after you install either. How bad is your whistle pre-reso? Would be interesting to see if this reduces the amount of whistle on the EMS setup.

I'm about to address this issue as well. I'll be interested to read your results an opinion.

When you install one of the resonators please post the results since mine is being build now and i want it to be not much louder than the stock. Audio of before and after would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am not an expert but the whistle is only present on OEM exhaust system once you upgrade the whistle is a thing of the past.

Actually I have zero whistle, not sure why:meh: no whistle before with the aero muffler either. The only time I've heard it was on someone's YouTube video so I know what it sounds like. I will however try to do some simple comparisons using my iPhone. Maybe usind a decibel meter app and a video or something.

Retrofive: I looked up CreeperSleeper's resonator and he used a resonator off of a 2007 VW GTI 2.0T as his main muffler. A little late for that now:doh:

Just fine tuning really, getting bored this winter and the cruiser has been calling:cheers:

I have an EMS and look forward to hearing how much difference it makes.

I didn't weld mine in...just used the same type of clamp that EMS sends with the kit. Makes swapping easy.

I cant use clamps b/c the straight pipe available is barely enough to even weld in the resonator.

Heres a youtube video if the hushpower, moroso, and no resonator. What do you think, besides alot of condesation:doh:

Resonator options

I took it on the highway with the moroso and the drone is gone, but that could also be attributed to the exhaust dumping down instead of out the side. I havent tried the hushpower on the highway yet, that sucker was too hot so swap during lunch.

So I installed the Moroso tonight, sounds great! I had to expand one end of the resonator for some reason, I thought 2 1/2" inlet to 2 1/2" outlet meant just that. Luckily we have an autoparts store in town that loans tools out:)

My tig welding skills could use some improvement but there's only one way to learn. This is a "good weld"

It did turn out well in the end, every thing fit just like before. Too bad all the decent welds are on the topside...LOL

Anyhow, the drive home from work was a pleasure. The overpass (walled) that usually sounds the loudest was quiet, and off the line it sounds great too. The higher rpms don't reverberate through the cab anymore and that's exactly what I was after. Didn't get a chance to hit the highway yet but I know from the drive home it will be mint. I have a few other sounds clips from before the resonator and I'll post up tomorrow when I get an "after" video.

How early an EMS?

Superjuice, I was wondering how early you bought your EMSPowered exhaust? Did you buy before he offered them with a resonator? Any idea which resonator he offers for the extra $90?

Thanks,
Juice

superjuice if you ever find yourself in the Raleigh, NC area, please let me know because I owe you beers!

I too have the EMS + Magnaflow and the noise was getting on my nerves. I had an Aero resonator, which I have come to believe is strictly for ricers. I got the painted steel Moroso spiralflow from Summit Racing and put that on, the sound is absolutely perfect!

I can hear the exhaust but it's not at all loud; at higher rpm's it has an aggressive sound that is not obnoxious, just what I'd call aggressive; at idle and around town it is subdued. All across the rpm range, it's fantastic.

Your clip of the resonators helped me get to this point. Thank you.

How about a followup? Do you notice any power reduction compared to the open tailpipe?

EDIT:

I went ahead and installed a Spiral Flow, and posted a new Install thread here:

Well that was a quick 12 years gone by so that’s sort of amazing!!

Unfortunately the rear hanger rusted off and took the muffler outlet weld with it 😖. I threw on a strap style hanger until I could get a permanent fix worked out. I’m tempted to throw a new muffler on “while I’m in there” but really not looking to open a can of worms with this.

I think this pipe is 409 stainless, should I just tack it back together with steel mig wire or go the extra mile and load up some stainless in my miller 211? I already run an argon mix so I think it would work but is it even worth it with so much corrosion already present?

Also, what do you think about rubber hangers at the tailpipe? Thinking a solid welded tab like it was would be best but the only give currently is a short flex joint after the cat, welded with a v-band clamp. In true mud fashion I tend to overthink this stuff so any comments are appreciated!
