It turns out my funny story turned sour!!! The temp is running hotter, the hose is leaking, and it looks like the PHH is shaped like an S. I don't know if they bent the pipe or what. It doesn't look like its right, the offset is at lest 3/4". I have attached a pic of the temp gauge and the coolant sample I took from the radiator. I cant tell if its the red or pink. I gave them red. Why would it be hotter?? The coolant was sealed and 5 yrs old. The PHH wont last in a S shape, even if it is silicone. I have the original temp gauge mod.

Some thing seems to be obstructing the flow some where. I say ditch the PHH and that metal hose while you are at it and make it a one piece hose. Also check your thermostat.

I just had a coolant flush, do you think this hose offset is an issue?? Should only affect the heater. I dont think it will last long like this.

Honestly I had never seen an offset hose like that before; although I believe that can very well cause the issue you are having. Also can't say much from the picture but if the metal hose inside the blue PHH is squeezed due to different angle and/or too much toque on the clamp then that can be another variable; I think.

You're probably right, I don't think it will last long like that either. You may want to consider a bypass as was already suggested. Your red coolant appears to be a little too red. Are you sure it was mixed?

I guess there's something to be said for doing your own work. I guess you always know it was done right, or at least how it was done.

I agree, I think the coolant is too red. Looks like they used straight coolant. If they can bend the pipe, I should be able to bend it back. If not, I guess its a bypass hose. I plan on firing up the truck tomorrow and letting the bubbles get out of the system, then checking to see if it gets hot. I think they screwed up the pipe because the original hose was straight.

The mounting tabs that are welded to the metal downpipe are bent from pushing it around while trying to get the hose on. OR, they removed the two mounting bolts and did not install. You mentioned the offset was 3/4"....the ID of the hose is less.

Part of the reason I did the bypass is that my hose ended up offset (thought not quite as bad as yours) the two times I tried to do it.

Your shop either bent the brackets that hold the rigid hose or they didn't replace the bolts that hold it in the right position. You might see if you can bend the metal hose back into the right position, or you could take the easy route and just bypass it. You're talking a probable 1-2 hours, a lot of grief and pain and possibly not fixing the problem or 20 min and a working solution that's easy to repair in the future.

Agreed.

What could cause the hotter temp??

The whole reason you dilute with water is because water transfers the heat better. Antifreeze, however, has the advantages of being less corrosive, boils at a hotter temp and freezes at a lower temp. So I suppose a 100% solution could account for hotter temps because it doesn't dissipate the heat as well.

Man - I was really excited for you when you posted that price for the PHH install. Definitely doesn't seem like so much of a bargain now - we've all been there. I'd check to make sure the pipe is bolted. If so, I'd try bending it back. If that fails, go for the rubber hose workaround.

Good luck.

I was excited too, I will try to "bleed" the system and see if that helps. If not, I plan on re bending the tube and adding some water. Its ridiculous what Toyota Dealerships do. I couldn't believe what I found when I got home to take a look.

You could always take it back, show them the problems and tell them to do the job right--they should take some responsibility especially if it's a Toyota dealership working on a Toyota vehicle.

I agree, but I am afraid they will screw it up worse. I had to request distilled water, the service tech said they use tap water. I have zero confidence in dealerships moving forward. They burned me on a wheel problem about 5 months ago when I was new to the 80. Coolant stuff is hard to do in a neighborhood.

I say go back to the dealer. If they don't want to do anything about it, talk to the service manager.
