My consol shift indicator light(s) have gone out on my 1996 80. The ones on the dash work. Is bulb replacement easy or a pain? What do I have to take apart? I do not have a FSM so need some help.

Hmm, I'd like to hear about this too. I think mine was out when I bought the truck but assumed they didn't even come with them because the dash has indicators. My dash lights all work (including the 'D'!), but the shifter itself is dark as far as I can remember. Depending on the answer you get, I may or may not decide to fix this on my 97 LX

I need to replace both the "D" on my gauge indicator and the one in the shifter.
When I took apart my interior to fix a ground issue I took a look at the bulb in the shifter and I didn't recognize the type, looks super specific.

So are these, the indicators at the shifter, suppose to be lit or not? I have only had my 80 a short time and I thought that when I first got it they were lit but maybe not. Yes or no?

The illumination on the shift console is real easy to replace. Just unscrew the 4 screws that hold the forward console on, unscrew the transfercase shift knob and lift. You will also probably need to put the shifter into D so that you can lift the console over the shifter. At that point you should be staring at the shifter lens housing. You might be able to reach the bulb without removing the housing. I can't remember. If not the shifter lens housing comes off with I think 2 bolts. I believe the bulb attached to the housing from underneath.

Just did this a few days ago. Everything Darwood said is correct. I will add that it is easiest if you plan on removing the 4 philips head screws (2 forward, and 2 rear) that hold the shift selector inidcator to the floor.

Slide the entire piece up and look underneath. This is a twist lock type bulb socket that holds the socket into the gear selector indicator housing. I found it difficult to untwist without being able to lift the housing.

What I found out after replacing this previously is to make sure you get the bulb properly seated. I did not originally and the light would work for about 10 minutes or so and then go out. The next morning it would do the same, and so on, and so on.... I attribute this to me not getting the bulb all the way down in the socket and when it heated up it lost contact.

Repalced with and LED so hopefully I will never have to deal with it again.

if your going to be in there swapping bulbs go LED, search definitive LED thread or something like that, username TreeRootCO, or similar. He has listed all the LED replacement bulbs for the entire interior.

Repalced mine today also. Thanks Darwood for the good instructions. Did not go LED but will next time.
