Tundra visors in an FJ80 Problem Solved...

SOLVED!! October 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Bought some 2005 toyota tundra visors from Ebay, paid $30.00 shipped. These came with secondary visors which I didn't mount.
Took off the old sun visors, used a dremel and cut off the mounts for the old visors.
carefully, cut off the mounts for the new visors.
thinned out the arm on the new visor with the dremel because it was thicker
Heated the old visor mounts on the arm of the new visor and with a rubber mallet gave em a mild wack and they slipped right on.
See the results in the picture. Works great and has extensions too...
Now that's what I call innovation....
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone hit this problem from this angle yet?

Will a Tacoma or Tundra sun visor mount in my FJ80? I'm wondering if anyone has tried this approach before. I think logically it would only make sense to do it this way instead of taking the chance of buying another FJ80 visor that eventually will end up having the same fate as the already floppy one I have now. It would be nice to have something a bit newer like a Tundra visor even if it requires minimal drilling and tapping, etc...at least I think it would look nicer than those spongy FJ80 visors.

I know I'm not the only one that has problems with their FJ80 (1995) sun-visor flopping down, cuz everytime I go to the classifieds to see about purchasing another used one they are long gone...these things sell like hot cakes. I priced a new one and it was $142.50 new from the dealer. Screw that.

That's my rant about rediculous FJ80 visors..and what's up with these electronic antena's that snap off!?!?! I'm working on a coat hanger fix now...haha j/k.

let me know suggestions...

Only everything... I am currently trying to swap the entire interior and a few body panels from a tundra into my 95 80... :grinpimp:

Tundra LTD: 2 visors in 1!

something bad a$$ about a Tundra visor that makes it a must have:

One of my few disappointments with our LX450! A picture is worth a 1K words:

Ya, but how does it fit in the LX? What about the lighted mirror?

I have been looking for a viable donor visor for some time. One that will bolt right up, include the lighted mirror, have the side slide-outs, and allow the overhead subtank console to fit. I know, demanding...

Nothing at all...for that matter I would stick a chevy, dodge, or ford visor in, but then again I probably wouldn't have the same odds of the bolt patterns lining up would I? Also, I wouldn't want to muck up my interior by putting that kind of crap in there. hehe...

Yeah...good greif...who cares about the a lighted vanity mirror anyhow...all I want to do in wheel and block out the sun once and a while...of course there is the deer that jump out every now and then to which it would be good to pull a nice visor down just before smacking one square up.

Anyhow...I do like that Tundra look, but I just need something functional to do the job that will mount up preferably without drilling, but if drilling is required then sobeit.

Would you be able to tell me if on your Tundra if the outter visor bolt hole pattern lines up with your LX450's? Assuming you do have both.

I'm about to go to my neighbors and take his visor off his Tundra to see if it will work.

One of the obvious reasons for getting a Tundra visor that I can see is that I think the cab sizes would be similar to the Cruiser and I think that the visor would be a closer match than anything else also with the Tundra visors being much cheaper and probably more readily available.

thanks!

Call CruiserDan and see if he can get you a better price. Possible if you have gray interior. The tan DS visor is unobtanium through normal Toyota channels but Dan can work miracles if you ask nicely. A better price is not possible if you need tan though so don't freak about the price.

That issue was addressed a while ago...do a search for "magnets". I had the idea of this about 2 years ago and posted it up with pics.

Here's the fix

Guys, this is the idea I had a few years ago....and it works flawlessly. You simply add VERY STRONG magnets. (one magnet is shown in the pic) The OTHER magnet is BEHIND the skyliner and is inserted under the skyliner at the sunroof opening. You line up the magnets on each side of the skyliner and it's permanet sex between the two ;-). The magnets are so strong they will NEVER seperate.
The total fix takes 2 minutes. Once you add your gargae door opener...this act as the "visor support" to the visable magnet.

Be advised the magnets this strong are industrial and I have access to some if you can't find any. I am guessing they have a 25 lb. pull.

Great idea!!! I detailed a 1995 LC that had the floppy driver's side visor. I tried velcro tape but no love. They had the visor twisted and the end shoved into the sunroof opening (not exactly pretty). I will contact him and let him know about this amazingly simple fix.

Thanks again!

i had the visor problem pop up while overseas in all of my cruisers. Instead of the magnet, i used some industrial epoxy and glued Hook and Loop to the headliner/visor, i used tan, and it matches the visors. no problems.

Would those magnets be neodynium? You know, the type smaller than a dime you'd like to place under your boss' hard drive? Or you can place 2 in a test tube & get one to float above the other? :flipoff2:

:princess: insists on driving either the LX450 or Tundra to work on a daily basis. I'll take a gander & measurements tonight.

Our 2000 Tundra LTD's ADDITIONAL STANDARD FEATURES OVER SR5 included:

Illuminated driver & passenger dual sun visors with extensions

The extension was not pulled out in the pic above.

The dual visors are very handy when the sun is low & you're headed S or N, or when the dang :o won't maintain a position & keeps dancing around the normal visor spot. The Tundra's main visor hangs too low in my opinion, but I've learned to live with that.

There are nits to pick between our Tundra & LX450, considering we purchased the Tundra on Labor Day, 1999:

ABS was an unobtanium option for most dealers; only 6 units had ABS in the KC region when I was looking. Also looking for Golden Sand Metallic & later found out that ABS was NOT available with that color (??). I called Olathe Toyota & was told they had 2 Golden Sand Tundras on the lot, both w/ABS. Drove up that day & the sales rep pointed to the 2 at the entrance. They in fact had NO Golden Sand Tundras, but did have ABS in Thunder Grey Metallic Access Cab LTD 4X4 (looked like GS to rep!). Thunder Grey changes hue according to the ambient lighting & hides dust pretty well. Several years went by before Manhattan's Little Apple Toyota sold a Thunder Grey Tundra. Both our Tundra & the LX450 stand out in this college town, as did my 77 FJ55 back in 78. :grinpimp:

Tundra's passenger seat does NOT have power, & driver's does NOT have memory. Jeez, Toyota, it was the top of the line . . .

That right there is a world-class tangent. Seriously.

Well these type of magnets are hard to find....due to the strength of them. They are about 1 square inch and takes literally about 20 lb. pull to get them apart. I can get them for about $17.00 bucks FYI....if anyone needs them.

THANXS, I'm 10,224 behind you & have been rackin' my noggin, afore mortality steps in. :grinpimp:

Here's some ~penny-sized neodyMium magnets <$1 @ K&J Magnetics - Products which might not jerk the visor out of a :princess:'s hand. YMMV

:hillbilly:

Even better price...but be advised the magnets you get must have the power to attract each other between the thick skyliner our cruisers have.

These magnets work great I purchased from airlaird, There is only 1 thing that I do not like about it and that is if you want to put a sun visor CD holster up there it is to think and the magnets do not connect and hold. BUT THEY DO WORK GREAT!

I have a 94 Eplorer with about the same color (tan) interior and it has the double visor I am looking into swapping but I haven't done that yet.
