I posted this question in the 70 series forum, but got zero replies... So, what do you guys think of running 255/85/16's on 70 series 16x6 steel wheels on an 80? I'm thinking they should work okay, but 6" wide wheels would be at the extreme thin side of what would work with a 255 tire. Almost like running 285's on a 7" rim. I know it's been done because I've seen photos of it, but not sure how good an idea it is...?

Any 33-34 inch diameter alternatives that might be better on an FJ80 with these wheels?

Not running a 2.5" lift like a lot of guys - just 1" +/- I got from the OME "low lift" springs.

Thanks

285/75R16 work perfectly fine on 6.5's...255/85R16 maybe a better fit on a 6" wheel.

Most guys running 255/85's on duallies use the existing 6" wide rim which is almost perfect for that tire. I ran 2 sets on 7" rims, and they look kinda funny on 8" rims that is my current setup.

I have heard most overlanders across the water are using 6" rims. The 255/85 is very popular over there.

Yeah, but so are 235/85's aren't they? Like I said, I've seen photos of 255's on 6" rims so I know it will work, but didn't want to worry too much about crowning or anything "wierd" going on when going down the highway. 80's are a good bit heavier than 70's, right?

Going back to the not-useful off-road dually principle, the guys with the lifted duallies were actually putting on 37x12.50 Swamper radials on 6" wide rims and getting 20,000 miles-plus out of the tires with the correct pressure! Like you said, it would be like running the wider 285/75's and 305/70's on 7" rims, which people do all the time. Just watch your pressure.

I've been looking to go the 255 route for my next set of tires, most likely cooper discoverer s/t's. According to their site, the approved rim width is 6.5" to 8", meas. rim width 7". I'll probably get a set of steel taco rims (16x7) when I'm ready to pull the trigger.

The problem with Taco or Tundra rims on an 80 is that the backspacing is way too much - sucks the wheel too far into the centerline of an 80. You could use spacers, but that's just too much tinkering for me. If these 16x6's will work, I'll go ahead with them and save my 16x7 Uniques as a spare set with 265/75's.

Thanks for the input, guys!

Well, what the heck? I did some more searching and there is a lot of conflicting measurements on the taco rims. I thought they were 4.25" b/s, but I see a few other numbers out there. (Sorry for the hi-jack.)

I definately like the look of your 70 series wheels, and prefer them to the tacos. Looking forward to see how this works for you. Please post some pics and results when you get them on.

You betcha! It will be at least a couple of months before I have them all mounted up... and add the ARB, get the flares torn off, repaint her dune beige-ish, etc. But yeah, I will post pics when she's done!

I have older Tundra / T100 / Taco? steel wheels (16x7) with 285s and it works just fine.
Backspacing is same as OEM 80 wheels (4.5")

Well, I don't know about YOUR rims, but I almost bought a set of Tacoma rims that measured about 5.25" backspace - Lying the wheel on the floor, brake-side down, and measuring from the floor to the back face of where the lugs come through.

I am not sure my wheels fit the Tacos. They were early Tundra / Sequoia IIRC. Possible that the Tacos were smaller and with different BS.

33x12.50s work on 15x7s, so a 33x10 would work well on a 16x6. Narrow rims are poor mans bead lock, and the only negative I know of running a smaller rim is you get a little more wear in the center.

Nice color choice, dune beige looks awsome on a flareless 80.

Yeah - here's what I'm aiming at (more or less), minus the pop-up.
