Discovered gear oil collecting under the transfer case around the drain plug.
Everytime I stop, I notice a couple drops on the ground. I can't ignore it anymore. So, I cleaned the surrounding area to pinpoint where the leak was coming from and discovered its leaking where the transmission mates up with with the tranfer case (not sure that's an entirely accurate description). Definitely not the front or rear output seals. Neither is it coming from the speed sensor.

Anyhow, the pictures will do my description justice. It's leaking/seeping where the arrows are located. Mainly from the bottom half of the TC.

Not ever doing something like this before, I was contemplating how much time and effort it would be to do this repair myself. At the moment, I foresee pulling the transfer, applying RTV and putting everything back together. I understand there's more to it than that, but that's pretty much it in a nutshell. I'm still doing my research.

*Anybody with experience try fixing this type of leak/seeping? Is it a matter of single digit hours or double digit hours?
*Was also wondering if it's something I can do all by my lonesome, or would I be better off paying a pro to do. Don't wanna kill myself :)

The seal between the transfer and the gearbox is worn out old mate.Happened to my wagon.
Best for an expert for this job.
It's not like the old style jobbies where you can run a hose from g/box to transfer.

Much tougher than I thought it was going to be then. Definitely don't want to spend too much time hassling with this. Not during this time of year anyhow.

Not neccesarily tougher if you are good with the tools and following the repair manuel.
I wasn't so got the experts to do mine.
Dosn't sound like this is a common problem in the States as no other replys.
This must be happening more as the wagons get older.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more I want someone else to do the fix for me.

Second opinions. Anyone else care enough to chime in?

Yes, I've searched.

Maybe not to many replies as nearly all US 80's are auto's.
Good luck though.:)

Maybe I mis-stated in my original post. My vehicle is automatic :)

It looks like a bad seal. Could it be anything else?

That's easy to say. I've thought of doing it myself, but time is not on my side. I'd rather have a pro do it, and frankly just don't want to mess with it. :)

So; find a good shop and do it. :meh:

Should be a *very* easy job for a decent (<---know one???) shop.
