Today my A/C started acting 'goofy'. It works as long as the variable slide control is set to the coldest setting. If I move it just a little to the right for warmer air it immediately starts blowing HOT air. Any ideas what this might be? Thanks

help...

Does the CE 80 have the automatic climate control like the LX and 80 AEs do? Reason I ask is that my '97 40th AE does the same thing...You either have full hot or full cold, nothing between. It was like this when we bought it and haven't really tried to figure it out yet. The guy I bought the rig from said Toyota told him it was a $120 part.

I did some MUD searching but I didn't find anything all that close to the problem. There was a thread about something on the firewall that you needed to watch while someone moved the temp controls (how's that for fuzzy info :)) to see if it moved in relation to the temp slider...If it didn't you needed to fix that dealyo

Anyway, sorry I'm not much help but I'll be watching to see if you figure it out as it may solve my problem as well

If it's the automatic system, you can take out the control unit (remove it from the dash), and flip a switch in the back which makes it completely manual.

Really? Is the switch clearly a switch? Thanks for the info.

Yeah, we've got the same problem, but mine just started doing this today...bummer. Funny thing is...I just had a XM Radio installed yesterday and the installer was bumping 'stuff' all back there.

If I remember right, yes it is pretty obvious. I'm pretty sure I saw it when I was putting my CB into the '97 LX. I'm pretty sure there are some pics floating around on MUD in threads where people were considering retrofitting the automatic climate control in. Unfortunately it is more than just the button and the switch that make the automatic climate control work (sensors etc)

If that is all it takes to fix it that would be great...I'm not sure as mine behaves the same whether in automatic mode or just regular mode...All the way left = cold...any other position = hot

Hmmm...maybe they forgot to reinstall one of the controllers? Did they have to take the face trim/surround off to get the XM radio installed?

I'd check just for piece of mind. Take out the ashtray, remove the two screws in that slot, pop out the little tray deal at the top and remove the two screws there and that face piece comes off with all the buttons etc attached.

The Slee Center Diff Lock install guide might help if you've never taken the surround off before.

I took off the trim and checked every connector for proper seating...problem is, there are (2) small connectors unplugged that might go in place of the plugged connector in the back of the temp sensor next to the slide control in back of the controller...one is blue and the other white. I just don't want to plug in something that is going to 'pop' something else. Hell, I dunno...hopefully some of the website's 'top brass' will come to our rescue.

The blue and white connectors are from the Toyota VIP alarm light. They shouldn't fit in the back of the AC controller.

I was reading the thread that everyone is referring to just last night; I'll try and find it again. What I do remember is that there is a cabin temp sensor in the bottom left corner of the heater/AC control unit (to the left of the temp slider). Some folks with the auto climate control have reported it getting clogged with dust after 10 years and not being as sensitive. Try cleaining it out with a toothpick or compressed air (low pressure). This might help. The other option is to flip the switch on the back of the control unit from "A" to "M"

I'll try to find the thread with pics

96r50 & BHM Cruiser- Your help is appreciated. By the way, is the switch on the back of the A/C control assembly OR inside the assembly? Do I need to disconnect the A/C control assembly from the dash trim piece to access the switch internally? Is it a dip switch or toggle etc.? Please advise...Thanks

CAN'T FIND SWITCH...CAN'T FIND SWITCH

96r50...I think my corrugated white hose is off that air inlet 'tube' on the back. I'm going to check everything again tomorrow. Thanks so much for the targeted thread...

I finally figured out the reason for the ACC A/C difficulty...when reassembling my A/C & Radio cluster equipment back together he / Satellite Radio installer plugged in the small white wire clip/harness that is tied with a blue clip for the alarm into the thermostat sensor dealeo. I unplugged that clip and plugged in a 'homeless' white clip that was just hanging around behind the dash waiting for someone to take him back home...so I did and it all works great again. Seems like you gotta really watch anyone working on your car these days...

Corsair23...you probably would have never known since you bought the vehicle that way. Damn rookie installers not re-checking their work.

mine did this in the winter so it had a hair trigger for the heat/no heat.. I pulled the controls out and found the connector had come loose, plugged it back in and everything was fine

Feeling pretty stupid right now...

Based on what you found I took my own advice and pulled the face trim to take a peek...I took the PO at his word and that the Toyota dealer had told him to get the HVAC temp control working again would cost $120 in parts and labor...

Well, 4 screws and 15 minutes later I had my HVAC temp control working again, my ashtray lit back up, and everything back in place...I can only assume somewhere along the line the HVAC temp control connector pulled out from someone working in there or just due to time. It is the only connector back there (aside from the cig lighter plugs) that just slides on with no lock

Now I feel like a dumbass that I've let it go this way for 3+ months...Of course the :princess: thinks TX80Fan and I are heros now :D. I also replaced her antenna mast so now it goes up and down as well as it should...

Joining the "got something disconnected club" from this thread.

Had the same symptoms: all cold or all hot with hair trigger around 67 degrees.

Took the center section face plate off today to find the tube and the electrical connection to the cabin temperature sensor was disconnected. I believe it was from the PO's antenna rewire job. While I was in there, I got inspired to order a CDL switch and a cup holder.

If we can find a few more people that this helps maybe Romer will stick it in the FAQs :)
