My buddy was asked to look at this dudes 4Runner. guy said he rebuild the engine, now has a bad knock. He comes up with no conclusion as to whats wrong. I go over there and get the details. New head, new rockers and assembly. new valves. new timing chain and works. new pistons. new rods. turned crank. honed cylinders. new water pump. he tries to fire it for me. wont fire. I take off the valve cover. he says he heard a snapping sound. I think bent valve. I look at the cam and rocker wear profile. its all bad. i go to turn the crank. It is SO tight. we took the plugs out. still super tight. as im looking at the cam lobe where its tight, i notice a small gap on the head bolt. the bolt is finger loose. i get the torque wrench out and only checked three other bolts. none are CLOSE to being tight. this moron said he put it all together. Obviously if this part is as messed up, imagine how bad the main and rod bearings must be. Moral of the story: If you have pushed a pencil your whole life and decide one day to "become" a mechanic, for love of all the starving children, mess up a lawn mower first. Not a poor 22RE.
