Hey guys n gals...great site and a sunny hello from South Africa.
I've got serious 'jeepenstein' that i need some help with. I've pretty much identified most of the drivetrain except for the gearbox and transfer case. The previous owner is convinced it's from a Prado (80 series), but i'll try describe what can't be seen in the photos. It's 5pd fwd shift (gear shift and Hi/lo are on gearbox) and the t-case has the port for a shifter on top but it has a plate cover. I'm convinced it's a r151 box purely from pictures i've seen but it could be an r150, i just don't know. At the top of the box (by shifter base) there is rubber tubing that goes to the base of hi/low shifter and another that goes down to a nipple on the 'actuator' on the t-case. I'm not sure if it's purely venting but there are no other tubes going anywhere else so i'd have to think it is. At this stage it's running 2wd probably because all the wiring going from the transmissin area to the engine bay ends off with 2 plugs both of which are blanked off. There are 2 wires coming from the transmission going to some relay in the dash that i can hear click when i engage 'lo', but thats it. I'm hoping it's a part time 4wd t-case that once i figure out how to wire it up the 4wd will engage but i don't know where to start and don't want to risk damaging anything by applying power to the actuator (i would't even know which pins to give juice). So i guess i'm hoping one of you will recognise the setup and maybe identify exactly what i have. I'm scared it's a permanent 4wd with cdl, in which case there's something seriously wrong in the t-case, but lets see what you doods and doodettes rekon?
Much appreciated
Rick

(So I can read it...)

No, its not FT 4WD. You can easily test to see by jacking up one or both front tires, and GENTLY (because it will want to drive off the jack) try to rotate the tire with the transmission.

If, in fact it is AWD, the tire off the ground will spin and no others should.

Then your only problem is the Center Diff Locking mechanism.

A Prado 80 series???? Never heard about it. I thought all the Prado's were slightly scaled back versions of the heavily beefed real LC series. But hey what do I know, these never were, and never will be offered in the US.

Don't hurt yourself doing my little test. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, or the only place you can do it is a cliff ledge, DON'T do it.

well this is the problem, the actuator is not connected to any power. So either it's been left in 2wd mode and all i have to do is wire up the actuator, or it's a permanent 4wd, and then i have problems, cos as it is the front drivetrain isn't engaged and on a permanentr it should be.
I guess thats why i need to identify the t.c....i wont know what im dealing with untill i know what i got.

If this helps, Advanced Adapters says the way to ID a Chain driven and a gear driven TC is the number of bolts that hold the rear most plate on .

AA says if 7 bolts hold the cover on its a GEAR driven TC.

If its 5 then its a Chain driven case.

Regardless, that is NOT an AWD case, cant be. The AWD is basically a Diff bolted to the back of the tranny, and thats not big enough or even shaped like it.

NOW

Being as though I don't know what Toyota has offered out side the US I can tell you that there are "SelectTrac" TC's available in junk here.

I doubt it, but wonder if Toyota put that into a vehicle with a sensor that indicated wheel slip and immediately locked it.

THOSE ARE OFTEN CONFUSED WITH AWD TC'S

That thing is chain driven.

Sad part is, those are the "shift on the fly" ones commonly associated w/ the "SelcTrac" method I was talking about earlier.

Put a vac on it, or jump the relay, heck put a shifter in it, regardless, try.

Thats the quickest way I would know of to possibly get it working.

Its also not the H (Hydraulic) series case

I would suggest you post this to the 80 section as well.

IF it is in deed an 80 series transfer, then it is Full Time 4wd not AWD. And the transfer case COULD, depending upon the year, have a center diff lock. That switch on your dash might be that-I am not sure.

Apart from that, they shift from 4 HI to 4 LO and nothing in between i.e. there is NO 2wd on a 80 series.

But again, this is US talk but I just doubt that they would offer such a different transfer case in other countries. That would be quite expensive. I can see a diff tranny but not a different transfer case.

For what's it worth, the 08 Prados share the LC 100 drivetrain so I am thinking in those terms-just backwards to the 80 series/Prado. Not sure though.

In certain parts of the world 80's are PT 4WD and even come w/ manual locking hubs.

This same conundrum was in another forum, I think it was 80's but IDK for sure.

Technically CDL locked w/ no front DS. is 2WD. But trust me thats not a FT TC.

No, Prado's share the Tacoma DT, and a Tacoma  is not  a LC DT ...sorry....cant help it...

(I'm NOT laughing at you, its just anyone that knows me knows I DESPISE any LC after the 80 series. And the thought/ possibility of Toyota doing a Taco to LC swap well...I just wouldn't put it past those bast***'s.)

I'm gonna try to get this out...

Ok. Does this vehicle run a drive right now?

I'm going to assume, Yes.

IF it was AWD, and NO drive shaft was connected to the front diff, it would not move unless it had (and it does not) a Viscus Coupler or the Center diff was locked. If it was only the V.C you would immediately feel a jerking sensation not common with ordinary driving. This WOULD be because of the VC trying to lock.

There are only 2 ways a AWD case can move a vehicle w/o a front DS.

1: The "Center Diff" is locked. But because you state that the actuator and the linkage is not hooked up. I consider this highly unlikely. I.O.W's it just didn't lock its self.

2: SOME AWD TC's have a Viscous Coupler in them that acts exactly like a limited slip in a rear diff only its in the Center diff.
When traction is momentarily lost those wheels on one axle will slip and cause the VC to temporally lock and divert power to the other set of axles. This is called "humping", and when its doing it to obtain drive,(no front D.S) you will know it. b/c it is not a mechanical feature, and requires heat to activate it is not solid and will jerk you around.

Center diff NOT locked, and no V.C in the case, it would not move.

If it is driving and doing ok, its defiantly a PT TC.

Whats it like now? Is it driving?...Running?

OK, then explain this

The Toyota A750F Super ECT five-speed automatic transmission has already proven itself in the Land Cruiser 100 Series and Prado quad-cam V6 models, and the six-speed manual transmission in Prado V6.

The automatic transmission has a gated shift and improved shift feel thanks to Toyota's latest-generation precision hydraulic control system.

Perhaps they changed in 08 but it is pretty clear that it is NOT using a Taco tranny/transfer

See this link

2008 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

I was just saying that ALL 80 series/100 series cruisers were full time 4wd. Not sure about other parts pf the world. I WISH we had an option for part time.

I don't know what the fellow has BUT he said it was from an 80 series Prado-which I agree is NOT an 80 series IF it is a Prado.
