Looking at the FSM it says to remove the steering wheel and column cover before removing the dash. Is this a necessary step, or is it doable without removing the steering wheel? I am planning on pulling the dash pad (for repair) and the lower dash (paint for the metal)

In a 62 or 60?

in my 60 I just lowered the the steering collumn by unbolting the collumn bolts . it provided enough clearance to remove the dash . also a makita cordless impact and a wobbly socket and long extension makes this job so much easier

oops.. yes i have a 60 series, thanks for the help.

But it is only about 6 bolts to completely pull the column and get it out of your way. Two of those you have to pull to remove the lower part of the dash (they are bolted to the lower dash) if you are going to pull and paint. That leaves all of four bolts at the fire wall. No point in fighting it. Just leave the wheel attached by the way. And if you leave the column in place just what is supporting it, just some sheetmetal of the firewall.

Might as well pull it out no big deal and will make your life easier. And the slip joint will just come right apart at the steering box without tools as well
