One of the previous owners had done the 2 low mod to my 60 and ever since I have owned the transfercase as leaked like mad. Yesterday I had an extra set of hands and wanted to find the leak, it turns comig from the shaft that linkage conects to. The problem is that when I shift into 2low and then shift out it pulls the seal out with it. I am wondering if any one else has had this problem and if so how hard is it to repalce the seal on this shaft with out droping the transfercase.

i have no way of proving it but always wondered if those that have completely removed the brace rather than bending/cutting it were the ones that always eventually had problems.

Was your brace removed completely or just modified?

I am about to do this mod but seem to believe the brace was for more than a lockout of selector position and may have been for bracing or stability as well. Just pondering....

usually the hardest part of replacing a shaft seal with the shaft installed is getting the seal out. If your seal is coming out anyway, then you should be able to press a new seal in. You will need some kind tool like a deep well socket or a piece of pipe to fit over the shaft and press the seal body into the transfer case.

HOWEVER--which seal is bad? if it is the seal on the 2wd/4wd shift linkage (#36313J) then you should be OK. If it is the seal on the hi/lo shift linkage (#36307A) then you need to figure out how to get the seal on and off without letting the inner shift lever fall inside the transfer case.

AS Brock suggests, you need to figure out why the seal is coming out and fix that problem so it doesn't happen again.
