hey, i am trying to set my timing on my 1983 2f. I took the inspection plate off an the timing indicator is there, but no timing marks. i chaulked the TDC line on the flywheel but i cant find a timing indicator. i set it using an advance timing lite and my ear. to 7 ish. no dieseling and engine revs good through rpms, but would like to be more accurate.

ANY THOUGHTS??????

If you found the TDC line, look for a silver BB about 7 degrees to the
right.

okay, had great hope that i missed something... but just looked and the flywheel is clean both to the right and to the left?????

pics o flywheel

okay here is my flywheel. TDC line in white and a drilled hole to the left circled in white. is that the BB you guys are talking about?

Thanks again for your help

I don't think that is the right line you have marked. You want to look outside the ring you are on or on the outer edge of the flywheel. If I remember right, the line ends by the teeth. Rotate the engine 180 and look again with a flashlight.

man i guess i am screwed. i rotated the flyweel inch by inch and there are no other marks on the flywheel or on the starter ring.

the drilled hole to the left of the line in the pic is just below the timing indicator on the engine casting with the timing light advance set at zero and at idle 650rpm. distributor vac pluged. this i assume would corrolate to my 7ish BTDC timing??????? hopefully........

cfdlighthouse -
That is what mine looks like (or at least what I have been using). Mine are barely visible thru the timing window. The "BB" on mine looks more like a recessed dimple. I'm not sure why others may look different, but mine is just like that.

Thanks for posting that shot - I think it will help others.

dude i hope so (love it when someone else has what i have), goes to show sometimes just a simple thing can take for ever to figure out and a picture is worth a thousand explainations.

Yep - not saying we're right, just that we're in the same boat. But since both of ours seem to time right at that spot, I think we're golden. I was more worried using the TDC line to adjust my valves.

hopefully the boat will float :D

valves are next for tomorrow so i here ya. the TDC line accuracy is important, however it can be verified by doing other stuff, but it would be nice to here if others have the same or similar marks.

You have the correct timing marks:

Sweet..................hey my BB fell out. thats not fair:hmm:. consensus equals relief. thanks everyone.....

My 2F has a small raised dot for a timing mark. The rotor should be pointed between #3 and #4 cylinder for TDC reference. Disconnect the and plug the vacumn line to the distributor if it has a vacumn advance.
Having said all that mine is a 1976 engine, I think there may be another style of timimg mark but I can't remember what it is.

Mine looks like the one Poser posted also, although I used a yellow NAPA Paint pen to mark mine.

Remove and plug both vacuum lines going into the distributor, as Jim said. Set idle to 650 RPMs.

more consensus great stuff....how does the yellow stand out under the timing light. i have always used soap stone from my welders pen.

Thanks
Dan

It shows up good- I don't know how it compares to white. It's all I've used.

It is much easier to see than before I painted it- unpainted, the line and "BB" were very faint.

I don't think a picture would show it very well in comparison to the timing light.

cool thanks. i might try the TDC line and see. like the idea.

So I have put a 2F in my 69 with the 3 speed transmission and t-case. So obviously I still have the 1F flywheel is there the bb and the line on the 1F flywheel also? I am having a hard time getting and keeping it running and was told that my timing might be off.
