Any ideas on repairing rust on the "A" pillar? I pulled the headliner to find out if the rust was also along the roof line elsewhere and there is NONE that I can see. The rust at the "A" pillar is only on the backside where it meets the door. I was going to take the wire wheel to it and see where I end up but at this point I don't see any perforation.

Does anyone have a drawing of a cross section of the "A" pillar so I know what it looks like in there?

Ideas?

Did you pull the whole headliner? If so, how hard was it? were you able to get it out without damage? Do you think you will be able to put it back up?

I have a FJ62 that needs roof repair and the headliner needs to come out to get it done and I'm wondering how easy it is to R&R the headliner. I have a quote of $450 for a professional to do it.

I ground my little rust off the A pillar and then POR-15 the exterior. But I do think it is coming from inside. So I then filled the inside with waxy LPS 3 to slow down the rust. I think it is mr yoda's bare seams again. :)

i think where the roof is attached to the a pillar creates a pocket.. perfect for rust. i'm trying to figure out where and how i can add a hole to let water/interior humidity to drain down the a pillar.

My headliner has been pulling out from around the windows for a while already. It was out around the front window and the drivers side cargo window. It's also torn in a few places. I was able to pull it out in one peice though and I hope to use at least some of it for the '45LV. I have a replacement headliner when I get it all done and ready and at that point I'll have a glass shop replace the cracked windshield as well as re and re the cargo windows so I can get the headliner in right. I put the bows back in to keep the sound insulation in place.

I hope to take the wire wheel to the pillar this weekend since we're in the dry season right now here in Guatemala.

.

Side cargo windows are very easy to remove and install yourself.

What do you folks think about grease in the pillers?

I did something like that.. I had about 15 rust bubbles along the rain gutter and a pillars.. I drilled them out (small holes) and pumped in some dielectric grease into the holes.. It stabilized the rust until I get around to fixing it. :hillbilly:

So, how did you fix it??

someday... I plan on me or someone welding in the rust spots. What I did was drill out the rust holes until I saw fresh shiny metal. I encased the raw metal with dietetic grease.. that stuff is almost like tree sap. Funny thing is, the cruiser's interior "breaths" better now. No more foggy windows after heavy rains. :D

I think all 60's in hot places should have one of these......

Hey, I can't help it that I don't live in Smithers or some other rainy wet cold place!! :)

I figure I did my time in Vancouver for 40 some years.

Upon closer inspection of the "A" pillar it appears that the rain gutter is spot welded to the "A" pillar on the outside and that the rust is coming from the area between the rain gutter and the "A" pillar. My thought is to remove the rain gutter that runs up the "A" pillar, clean off all rust that I might find behind there and then fabricate a new raingutter to be welded back on with a liberal application of seam sealer after it's all together again.

I do not think that the rust is coming from inside the truck as I have the headliner out and there is NO sign of rust ANYWHERE around the roof perimeter on the inside.

I do not think the rain gutter can be left off and still have a weathertight seal at the front of the door.

Has anyone done this or does anyone have any advice?

What is "waxy LPS 3". can you be more specific please?
thx

NICE! thanks for that info

Well, I've started on the rust repair of the "A" pillar. The rain gutter IS spot welded onto the "A" pillar and the rust appears to come from between the rain gutter and the "A" pillar due to poor/failing seam sealer in the gutter area.

Here's some photos after I peeled the rain gutter off to get a new piece formed up to fit.

Has anyone tried leaving the rain gutter off the "A" pillar area? I'm concerned that rain will get in around the door weatherstrip without the protection the rain gutter affords.
