Spent about 5 hours on Saturday restoring a pair of OEM sliding rear windows for my FJ62. These things came from Oz and were *hammered*, I couldn't believe the amount of crud under the rotten, crumbling gasket! I ended up with a small pile of bright red bull dust and a larger pile of dry insect parts; the gasket pretty much disintegrated and there was even dry green mold on the glass itself.

The plastic clamps and OEM hardware cleaned out pretty well, as did the glass, the frames didn't have any rust in them but took a lot of elbow grease to get clean enough to paint. I had to powerwash them a couple of times and sand one of them pretty much down to the metal, I think it came from a rolled *J6X, judging from the deep scratches.

I any case, the only snag I hit was that one of the two was missing the brush-like felt in the center channel of the aluminum brace that mounts between the two sliders. I'd like to replace it, but wouldn't know where to start. Any suggestions? Worst case scenario I think I can modify some wiper blades to fit in there, but if someone has come across the same problem, I'd appreciate some help. I'll try to snag some shots when I get home tonight.

Other than that, they're coming together nicely, I'm pretty psyched about this project, having had the sliders for over a year now languishing in the garage.

Also, it seems that the inside trim around the windows is what holds the slider frame in place, is that correct? For those of you that have done this project already, did you have to seal around the slider frames, or is the fit good? Just curious....

Felt type weather stripping? It might work pretty well, and the adhesive backing would make it easy to install.

Other than that.... pics plz!

I think you can use 80 series felt(vertical) for the 60 sliders, I looked at my AUS sliders(still working on them) and yep full of Aussie bull dust(the red crap) but I recall thinking that the 80 stuff would work, the rubber(not felt) is not long enough for the sliders, but could be made to work.

I've had the OEM sliders in my truck for over two years now and think they are a great addittion to it. They aren't perfect - they leak and soak the carpet padding every time it rains or when I go to the car wash. You know what wet carpet padding smells like in our trucks! Yuck. Still, a minor inconvenience, IMO. The biggest leaking point is the rubber track at the bottom of the back window. Couldn't find any modern replacement track so used what came with the windows. For the brace between the two windows, I found some "cat's fur" at a home window supply store. The factory material was very similar to the cat's fur only it had a mylar wiper embedded in the fur which created a better water dam than the fur alone does. Whatever, the dogs and I really like the windows and can only wonder why Toyota didn't install them on U.S. trucks. You'll love 'em too!!

Not only do these things leak, they look like crap. The guy at the body shop that took mine out refused to believe that they were a factory part because they just sit in the window opening. A thief with a crowbar can be inside your rig almost as quick as just smashing out the window. I love the idea of them but I wouldn't go back to them for anything. I got a pair that will be for sale soon.

Perhaps that answers the question of why they were not offered in the US.

Hmmm.... I guess I'll try them out. I bought them for my dog, that's the only reason. I used to have them in my FJ70 and they were a PITA, the frame got rusted out and dirt/mud clogged them. Still, those never leaked.

As for the security, the thief has to know about their flimsy installation first, I think they'd be more inclined to break the small window on the back doors before trying to pry the entire side window frame off. In my case, the cargo barrier would keep them in the cargo area, too.

If I don't like them, I'll flip 'em and go back to the old windows, but I'll give 'em a try first, if only to justify the effort I put into them.

I checked yesterday you can buy the center vertical metal piece for a 80 series for $30, it will come with the felt, now I am not sure if it will fit the 60 window but I'll look at it closer and let ya know.

Exiled, got some info for you, not good news however :(

Exiled,

I am in the process of restoring a set for my truck. Here is what I know. A local buddy who has a pig is doing a complete resto. Toyota no longer makes a bunch of what the pigs need, so he did some researching and find a company that can help us out on our sliders.

My rubber chanels were shot so, for the inside rubber chanels I am replacing mine with new rubber chanells. I bought them from http://www.stanpro.com/.

I got Unbeaded all-rubber channel:
Part Number 75000637
Section Number AS1222
Sold in 96" pieces.
See them here:http://www.stanpro.com/SPunbeaded.html

One 96" piece was about 1" less than I needed to do one window. You can make small slits in the back of the channel to make the corners fit tight down in there.

I did have some trouble ordering it. Couldn't find a company online to sell it, StanPro wouldn't sell direct. Cooper-Standard (parent company) wouldn't sell direct. I finaly found out that PPG and Clarke industries are distributers for StanPro products. PPG wouldn't sell direct, but told me where their local distributer was. The local distributer wouldn't sell it to me, but told me what local window specialty store had an account with PPG.

Turns out the widow specialty store was right down the street. They special ordered it for me and it came in 1 week later. About $45 for 2 pieces and shipping.

John, I am very intersted to know if the center vertical metal piece for an 80 will be the same lenght, or can be modified to work. The 60 ones have small screw holes that hold the center vertical metal piece into the window frame.

I still have to paint the frames, tint the glass, and install the windows so I have a way to go on this project.

Sloan, the guy at your local body shop must be a little dense. Almost all modern american cars have windows that install in the same way as these oem ones from toyota do. They install using glue to hold them directly to the body of the truck. A thief could easily pry the window glass enough to break them, but that isn't different from american trucks with sliding back glass, 80's, or a host of other vehicles with slide opening windows. Have you taken yours out yet? FWIK it is a huge pain to cut out the glue out that holds them in. If you are taking them out because you don't like th look, go for it. If you are taking them out because of what the local body shop said, I would do some more research if I were you.

HTH

Nope, he isn't dense, he couldn't believe a factory window stuck out like the factory sliders do with the gap around them. IMHO they look bad, they were clearly an after thought or they would have blended with the body lines better. I lived with them for 2 years and when the truck got painted, they got ditched in favor of the old windows.

I wonder if yours are OEM or aftermarket? Are you sure they are OEM. Check out Steve's (overhanger). This is the 62 that was on the cover of TT a few issues back. I think they look great. The guy that installed them wasn't pleased with how the glue looked, but I can't really tell. Do you mean that yours stick out physically from the side of the truck, or that the look sticks out as in "like a sore thumb?" Do you have any pics of yours?

I am interested in the factory sliders. Didn't know anything about them. Have you seen info on the web about them?

John,
Any pictures of how they hook up to the frame and such? Just bolt in, or welded?

Don't know why you would ever say that.. Steve's a big teddy bear.. always kind and gentle to everyone. ;)

Be nice Steve-o. The neighborhood hasn't gone yet.

:D John, you pimp!!! Made me laugh - two posts in a row! Yeah, Kevin, that was my truck at the RS swap meet and I'll be at the meeting tonight. See you there? As for the windows, I think I remember Sloan posting a pic a while back of his windows after they had been installed and the install looked cleaner than mine - and that he wasn't happy about it. Toyota must have had some sort of sash that filled in the space between the truck body and the outer part of the frame so it didn't look so weird. I can't remember what Gary Cobberly's HJ61 window looked like when I saw it at Moab in '03. The day I showed up at the glass shop to have mine installed the installer, who'd done good windshield replacement work on several of my other vehicles, had a day old cast on his hand for a broken thumb that had broken in a bar fight the night before but he said "no problem" and I was afraid to say "no thanks". :D Turned out to be a 100 degree day in Denver and the glue he was using set up too fast to do an artistic job on the outer frame, hence the cobby look. He didn't charge me because of that and the dogs don't seem to mind so neither do I. As I said earlier, the windows aren't perfect, they leak some but I'd do it all over again in a second, especially for the price that SOR gets for them compared to what I paid over two years ago.

I will have to post the info on the install from the FSM, I have em someplace, I recall there was no outer sash.

Steves sliders came from a Saudi spec 62...........make me happy his dogs are happy :)

FWIW Marv Spector hates the OEm sliders, he says the aftermarket ones he sells look like crap but seal better......he had me rolling on the floor when he told me that :)
