I just wrapped up an H55 install (or so I thought), and the transmission is stuck in gear. Don't know which one, but it's not 1st or reverse.

I pulled the shifter and tried monkeying with the shift cup, but I don't see what's causing it to jam up.

Any ideas?

Do I need to drop it back out and pull the top cover off to inspect?

Try monkeying with the shifter again, if you dont install it right it gets stuck in a gear. I had the same thing happen to me, installing it at 11pm is not the best time to be thinking.

I had this problem with a 4 speed once. Put the shifter in the wrong place. I thought I had removed it in neutral, but when I put it back in, it didnt work. Pulled it off and found out the problem.

Dont sweat it. Im sure that is what has happened.

The 5spd shifter is different from the 4spd. The lever has a little ball on the end that lands in a "cup" instead of the blade on the end of the 4spd lever. It's either in the cup or not. The cup thingy's linkage is what seems to be binding. I applied cautious force to move it around in every possible direction/combination of directions with no luck.

a. congrats on the progress you've made since Saturday... you are blowing through this job.

b. hope you figure out what the deal is... I doubt you're going to have an easy time putting that 4spd back in after turning it into a clutch tool.

Remove the shifter and move the "cup" around until you are certain it's in neutral then reinstall.

Exactly right. The H55s are shipped in gear when new. Just prior to install, you are supposed to pop it into neutral and then install. Hopefully, you can pop it into neutral now, and then re-install the shifter.

We can cut the shaft off the 5spd to reinstall the 4spd;)

Thanks CDan & DD!!

I called CDan to ask his blessing for the project. He recalled David Dearborn having the same problem. He called DD for the solution, said that his was a stuck synchro ring - he pulled the top cover & gently tapped the ring into place.

Hopefully I can get a chance to pull it tomorrow, fix it & put it back in Thurs or Fri.

Lesson learned - check it out BEFORE you put it in the truck!

Alright, I got it back out, and pulled the top cover off. Should I be able to shift the cover by itself when it's not on the transmission? All the gears seem to be correct, the rings slide back and forth and such, but the linkages in the top cover don't want to move.

Thanks

Yeah they should slide easy. Take the gear stick out and see if the nylon bush is on the end.
If the selector head wont side on the selector rod they must be bent ,worn or seized.
On aussie landcruisers that work in underground mines they put welding blobs on the selector rods to lock them in 1,2,3. Pray you dont have one of them:D

Hee Hee, I bought a used trans/transfer that I'm guessing came from Oz......

It seems to be stuck in 2 gears maybe.......I haven't opened it up yet

The problem must be somewhere in the top cover. The selector doesn't move around, can't tell why looking at it.

It is a brand new transmission, so it hasn't been welded. I'll look at it a little more, but I don't think I should have to repair a new one. I might screw something up worse myself!

Hell yeah, got it to work!!!:D

I had to rearrange the shift forks by hand with the cover off to get it into nuetral. Then had to line up the synchros just right to drop it in. Now it shifts through the pattern no problemo!

I'll put it in for good (fingers crossed) tonight or in the morning!

This has taken so long I had to buy extra beer.
