im doing a chevy conversion and downey says I need a special clutch for my fj40 V8 conversion. is this true? my dad has done several and he said he just put stock chevy clutches in them and he had no problem.

I bought their bellhousing for my conversion and they gave me the part # for the clutch and pressure plate. It was a centerforce clutch and plate 11" and don't forget the pilot bushing.

Call and talk with JIM, the owner of Downey, and he will talk with you about clutches, throw out bearings and anything else you need.

I had a 78-40 in the shop two years ago that the PO had installed a "chevy" clutch in conjunction with a Downey flywheel housing....the clutch fingers were not the correct height and the throw out bearing was not the correct one for the clutch creating all sorts of issues with engagement, etc.


When I talked with Jim then, I was told that they no longer use Centerforce pressure plates and drive discs for the Land Cruiser conversions, and when I used the parts that they sold me, and the pieces that I was told to procure on my own, the set up worked perfectly, and has continued to do so since.


Not telling you what you should do, just letting you know what worked for me.

I might be wrong, but you might be talking about the pressure plate, not the clutch disc itself. If you are using a toyota tranny and the cruiser throwout bearing, you need a LOW PROFILE pressure plate. I had this problem. If this is what you are talking about, search for "low profile pressure plate" and you will find a list of applications by chevy for this PP. Somebody posted this list and it was very helpful for me. (Thank you)

Here is a picture, the part number is the right one i think. it is the CA5473. Best part is that the PP was only 37 bucks!

PBG- your running chevy to chevy, so theres not clutch conversion/ mixing in that case. Toy tranny to Chevy motor and vice versa need special attention to right parts.

I think Jhaha and Steve are right.

i was confirming what Jhaha said, i used the same preassure plate he used
# CA5473 in all my v8 to toyota 4spd conversions , never had a problem using the one pictured on the right in his pic ,
i just mentioned that i also used it with my sm465 ,
in meaning that it works great with the toyota slave , which is key here .


used this preasure plate using the old plate adapter and cast chevy fork ,chevy bearing ,used it with the downey bellhousing and toy fork and toy throw out . all combinations worked great for me .
