8074/8274 housing colors

I'm rebuilding an 8074 winch (identical to the 8274, but without the freespool knob) and have a question about the housing color.

In all the pics I can find (of 8274's) the upper and lower housing are grey or bare metal, while the motor is black.

The 8074 I have has black-painted upper and lower housings. I'm stripping the paint off, but it is REALLY on there. Also the model/serial # sticker on the upper housing is applied over the black paint, which means it either came black or someone when through the trouble of lifting and reapplying the sticker. The lack of 8074 (as opposed to 8274) photos on the web makes it tough for me to ascertain if these came black from the factory...

so anyone know?

You might want to ask this question in the recovery forum. They seem well informed when it comes to this stuff.

Mine it not black and I've seen other 8074's that were not black. Does it have an AMC sticker on it?

It could have been. You could call Warn. I've always found them helpful but they might not know.

Upper and lower housing, motor, spool supports everything, it has the factory spool direction arrows on it as well so I would say it came out of the factory this way.
