Snap on 140a Mig Welder
I have the opportunity to purchase this welder used (barely) for a great price. Can I get a little feed back about this particular welder? I have only really used Miller's and Hobarts in the past. I was wondering how this would compare.

Don't know the deal you are working on but for that list price you can probably buy a 200+ amp. Don't know if you have 220 in your garage so the 100% duty cycle on 120V is pretty nice. I think the 5/16 single pass is a little exaggerated though myself, but it might be close. I've been welding my .120" cage together with a Miller 200 on Hi 4 (out of 6) so it might be right.
I don't understand what doesn't inclde gas purge means, it does handle gas and solid wire correct? I do know that Blue Point Snap-On welders were rebadged Century brand for a while. A neighbor has had one of those (Century) forever and it works pretty well for a small MIG. I wonder who builds the welders for Snap-On, that would be good to know. Good luck. __________________ '76 FJ40 - 2F,SO,SR,RDB,PS,4.88,Q78TSL,earlydizzy,mod'd carb,Aussie'd front, weld'd rear,MetalTech'd...still too fast in 4LO Great Basin Custom Homes |

That would be very good to know as Snap On service has been much like Snap On dealers for me - arrogant and hard to get in touch with. I wouldn't pay a nickle for the name plate. If you can get it cheaper than the company that makes it for Snap On and don't mind being all alone if/when it breaks, then it might not be a bad deal.

I've nevr seen a 120V MIG welder deliver 100% duty cycle at it's highest available output............but wait, that's not what Snap-On said. They said 140 Amps at 100% duty cycle which would have an entirely different meaning, or a new level of meaninglessness. Is it a typo, adman? a bit of wordplay? Or is it a nearly clever outright deception?
Whatever it is or isn't it's overpriced by about $1900.00. But, but, with a voltmeter and a gas purge you could do DC TIG too. You think? Why not just do it with a battery? All of my life I've been amazed by what that man in the truck will promise. __________________ Specialization is for insects '77 BJ40 FST;'77 FJ40; '65 FJ40; |
