Fencing Ideas?
I need some fencing ideas............I am going to go with chainlink unless there are some better options.
Our new place needs fencing in the whole backyard area. It is a little uneven with a slope going up to an upper patio. It needs to contain dogs and hopefully keep deer out, but I suspect the dogs will do that ![]() Is chainlink my cheapest option? I was thinking about lining it with rolls of bamboo to try and make it look better. __________________ 1972 FJ55 "Geirdriful" named after one of the Valkyries Check out my build thread: http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=165633 Some more good pics of the Pig here too: http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...-iron-pig.html Maid Marion, "Why, you speak treason!" You could do chain link with some kind of vine or something on it. Cat's claw grows well and fast here, and would love chain link. Don't know where you're at or what grows well there. I just put up a block wall and am going to find some nasty-assed thorny mofo plant to put on the outside to keep the neighborhood trolls from tagging or climbing it.

Here is what I put up in my backyard. Treated 4x4's with treated 2x4's top and bottom. Then capped with a treated 2x6. Then I stretched out a roll of galvanized wire from Lowes between the 2x4's.
I wanted something that was less visually obtrusive than chain link. The 2x4 at the bottom is nice when it's time to pull out the weed eater. It has kept my dogs in and the deer out so far. I just noticed the tree at the far right side of this pic is the one that fell on my house last year during a big storm. ![]() |

Rhino: nice looking fence. i really like the lower board -- might discourage dogs from digging under. However, the upper boards would provide a landing zone for my agility dogs...
x2 on alternative fencing. round these parts folks use 'no climb horse fencing', which has slightly larger mesh openings. I'm considering that to fence the rest of my 2 acres. depending on where you live be aware that adding bamboo slats or the vinyl inserts can increase your windload on the fence. let us know what you go w/. __________________ Oct 84 tan fj60, 260k mi -- FS $3k OBO Sept 84 tan fj60, 202k -- new to me Dobermobile/ K9 SAR truck, 2.5" BDS suspension enroute85 Honda Accord, 110k -- commuter 91 Kawasaki Concours, 50k -- on the road again |

You live in town or in the country?
If town, does the city have any ordinances stating what type of fence you cannot build? If the country, you could always go with railroad ties and no-climb horse fence. You can get the wire in 4' and 5' heights. __________________ Cruiser Dan at American Toyota Phone is 1-800-432-6668 ext. 8 (I am not cruiser Dan) My Tow Rig = http://forum.ih8mud.com/hardcore-cor...g-tow-rig.html |

We distribute Ocotillo fencing which will actually take root and grow. But it requires good drainage and a dry climate.

He lives on the coast and can see the ocean from his house. I don't think it is considered a dry climate.
How close do you have to plant them to make a fence? Do thye fill in between the posts? __________________ Cruiser Dan at American Toyota Phone is 1-800-432-6668 ext. 8 (I am not cruiser Dan) My Tow Rig = http://forum.ih8mud.com/hardcore-cor...g-tow-rig.html |

They come pre-wired in 5 foot rolls x 6' tall. Most people just use T posts with a top wire for support and install the sections butt to butt. __________________ '69 fj40 CSC#103 A dry heat still cooks a turkey |

What about an invisible fence? I've used several 'invisible' underground fences with good results. You bury a transmitter wire underground about an inch and the dogs wear shock collars whenever they're out. They're set to sound off a certain distance from the wire and shock them when they go past that. With a little training and some visual cues for a short while, it'll contain most dogs.

We use something like this to keep the neighbors out.
The 4' no-climb horse fencing is not on yet but you get the idea. __________________ Cruiser Dan at American Toyota Phone is 1-800-432-6668 ext. 8 (I am not cruiser Dan) My Tow Rig = http://forum.ih8mud.com/hardcore-cor...g-tow-rig.html |

Monnie. I saw your photo and was immediately reminded of the tale my wife told me. When she was a girl a friend pitched her a basket ball. She hit it with a bat and the recoil of the bat hit her in the face.
Just sayin...Don't let your girl slide her hands together...that grip she's got right there will send the tether ball rather than send the bat....what's that? something about fences? |

I too need to fence in my yard- going to do the cheap 3x5 landscape timbers from HD/Lowes with 2inx4in squares x 4ft tall. Maybe one board across the top to keep the fence from sagging...though i am likeing the looks of Rhino's fence-
What is no climb horse fence? ok i went and googled it and came up with my answer- guess the fencing i am looking at in Lowes/HD is a cheaper version of the Red Brand no climb horse fence- How about some installation tips? Stew Last edited by cruzer; 05-22-08 at 12:25 PM. |

rhinoliner, we did a very similar fence at my grandparents, to keep the dogs in and deer out. We didnt cap with the 2x6 though. We used 6ft tall fencing like yours as well, installed with large staples into the 2x4s and 4x4s. The 2x4s on top were across the tops of the 4x4s as caprails. It is very much better than chainlink in regards to blocking views and also appearance. Although in the back of the house, on the downhill slope, we used chainlink sections because you couldnt see it. That was very easy to put up.
