Rust scaler

I just got a cool new tool based on some research in how to get rid of old rust and undercoating.

It's called a scaler. It's used a lot in ships to get rid of scaly rust. It's just an air hammer with a bundle of needles - it's also called a needle scaler.

It works really well.

Pic 1 is the scaler
Pic 2 is before
Pic 3 is after about a minute.

Another couple of minutes on the really thick stuff in the wheel wells. Earmuffs, safety glasses and a particulate mask are a must. It'd really kind of suck without the rotisserie.

That's cool. Does it reciprocate or rotate?

Anyone who used one of those things in the Navy might not share your enthusiasm for a needle scaler

Reciprocate. It's really just a fast air hammer.

About an hour is all I wanted to do. Doing it all day would suck big time. It's hard to type with tingly fingers.

1 - about 45 minutes on the 55
2 - tried it out on the 40
3 - 20 minutes on the 40 hood. That old 60s enamel just cames right off. The red is primer. 10 minutes with the DA and it was bare metal.

I just had an instant nightmare. I was in the Navy, we used those devil tools on all aspects of 'chipping paint'. pics look good tho.

The welders at work use those for chipping slag off fluxcore welds too. Been thinking of getting one for welding but don't weld enough. Forgot it worked for paint and rust too. Gotta find one now! Mmm... more tools.

That one is a good'un. An IR
I paid about $160.

Harbor Freight has cheaper ones, but they're harbor Freight.

Do you just replace the needles when they wear down or do you have to buy a new tool?

You can buy needles. I hope to never wear 'em down.

I can see breaking them when they get caught in things though.

Gumby, does it only work at 90 degre or you can lay it and it will still run fine? What would be max angle?

It works better on the thick undercoating at an angle down to about 15 degrees.

Gumby,

That's a great tool, but be careful on sheetmetal, it will ding and warp it.

I have found them to be really usefull on frames.

Have you seen a Snap-On Crud Thug or Wurth Remove All Tool?

Both rock.

I was worried about the hood getting warped, but it was an old one for a junker. Anything was better than what it was.

That old 67 sheet metal is thick. It did just fine. I wont be using it on my 55 hood doors or panels. On the underside it's pretty well formed for strength. I haven't had any issues.

The IR scaler is adjustable as well.

I've always wondered how well they worked. Thanks for the writeup. Will be on my wish list behind a body saw.

x2

I've also seen a setup where the needles and their keeper twist onto the barrel of an ordinary air hammer (like the retainer spring normally would), but I can't remember where I saw it. I think it was pretty cheap...

I just checked one out at FastenALL. It looked to be smaller than the the one Gumby had. It was not a brand that I was familar with.

$135

Has anybody tried to use this on the the 2F pan gasket removal?

It would tear up some cork gasket.

It really won't do a lot on decent paint. I wouldn't anybody going out to get one to take the paint of their truck. It really doesn't do much on the factory paint on the 73 55.

12 CFM. I can't imagine it would require over 100 psi.

I'm trying to remove the undercoating from a pickup frame I have. The paint/powdercoat underneath the undercoating is in superb shape, and I'd like to keep it that way if possible. Do you think this would be a good tool for that, or would it mess up the paint too?

Thanks,

Ary

It might ding it up a bit. It would give it a hammerite finish if anything.
