I believe you will find the Warn 8274 to be the most recommended and arguably the best. However, due to your constraint of "arm and leg", it'll be out of line. OTOH, if you only want to buy the winch once, go with the 8274

I'll be after a winch shortly and as much as I would love to get a warn 8274, @ $2.5k I consider that to be an arm and a leg.
I have come across a new brand of winch TigerZ11. Its chinese made, 2009 model 12000lb, 6.6hp motor, waterproof/dustproof, wireless remote, with new brake system allowing you to winch up and down hills without working against the brake, 3yr warranty for only $695AU. Might be worth a try at that price.

If you dont have the money right away, start looking ebay, your local area Craigslist or here at the classified...for the right Warn 8274 or the M8274-50,,,the best decision that you can wait

I bought a used 8274, powder coated it, rebuilt it, AND bought rope... still under the price of a new one
For me, it is worth paying more up front for something I KNOW will be there for me. Better to have something that will 100% work rather than save $200-$300 and still need your friend to winch you out
As has been mentioned, you can get a used 8274 for $250-$500 everyday of the week. I paid around $300 for mine.
Not enough tea in china for me to consider any of the super knock off/off brands out there.

If you are going to get a winch go with Warn. I have three of them and they have never let me down. I have two XD9000I's one on the 40 and one on the Z71. I have a 3000lb. on my ATV. I have had one XD9000I since 1994 new and the other one I bought from a friend and it was made in 1992. I went ahead and rebuilt the 1992 one since I didn't know how it had been used and it looked rough with no cable. Now it is black and looks / runs like a champ. You simply can't go wrong with a Warn. I have a friend that has a 2007 Superwinch. That winch is the biggest POS that I have ever seen. Now he gets pissed when I laugh and say I told you so. Find a used Warn and buy it if you don't want to spend $$$$.

You can mount it in any direction as it's oilless
Only the Husky models need to be upright.

ok, let me reword that, will the legs spin so that the unit will stay upright, and still mount feet foward? I have an fj40 with a CCOT bumper and I dont know if i would have room to mount it with its height laying horazontal.
thanks again

You can mount it feet forward and rotate the endbell for the lever to whatever position you want.
The noid pack can be removed and mounted remotely, so the height isn't really an issue

Cheaper one is cheaper but in some cases, you should have to spend more money to warn likes brand to be more credible.

i vote for the warn or superwinch .

I have installed alot of smittybuilts.
Here in WA at 4wheelpatrs they are $299, cant beat that
They are fast and work great. They are no warn however they will leave you with an extra $1000 in your pocket.
DONT manhandle the lockout/in lever. its not very strong and I have cavemen friend that broke his by forcing it in. If its not turning smoothly just turn the drum a click or two by hand untill you fell the teeth line up and the lever moves in smoothly.
They sound way nicer than a milemarker or harbor freight winch.
Anyone who hates on these winches has not used one or has never built on a budget.
Theres always something better, but sometimes above average is plenty.

i try not to pay for anything ever
i got a desert dynamics 10k for free that needed a 150$ motor and some tlc that would ripp that smittybuilt in half and then keep winching .
you can get a used 8274 or 8274-50 for probably less then a new smittybuilt , after all the smittybuilt bumpers and steps and basically anything i have ever seen by smittybuilt ..... well i just cant trust a damn thing they make .

so you have never owned/used one? or just assuming? Any experience with one?
Just adding banter? I have used them all. Warn lovers will show their true colors here.

I was running a WARN m12000 on my LR Discovery but not for long. The WARN will be going on my Fj80. The Winch has served me well and will continue to. If you are planning on doing expeditions alone, or hitting the trails alone consider purchasing a winch that will not break on you in the middle of a pull.
Warn --> proven
SuperWinch --> used in all camel trophies at least the huskys
Ramsey --> good winches

I really like my Smittybilt, I have had people tell me how junky it is, but when you ask them they have no experience with them.

i bought a well used warn 8274 for 300$$ cad. and i researched it extensively .
i am broke so a budget is a must i wheel alone commonly and the hi-lift exterme has been my winching method to date . i plan on rebuilding the 8274 merely for cosmetics cause it works just fine .

Its chinese made, 2009 model 12000lb, 6.6hp motor, waterproof/dustproof, wireless remote, with new brake system allowing you to winch up and down hills without working against the brake, 3yr warranty for only $695AU. Might be worth a try at that price.

You need to look at Winch depot. Still not cheap but no where near $2.5K.
They always throw in some free stuff too, I got a snatch strap and receiver recovery point with mine. Plus they don't charge for shipping, something to consider with the 8274, 150' of 5/16 wire rope is frikken heavy.
That said I'd look for a used one they are pretty durable, unlike some of the imports.
