For a winch that will, more likely that not, be used one to at most 5 times per year...

Is it worth the extra $400 to get the Warn M8000 over the MM PE8000?

Has anyone here had trouble with the MM winches? Also- I live in RUST central, Iowa. Odviously I want to get into a synthetic rope. Also on the order of longevity, is there some kind of plastic shroud you can wrap the winch body in when not being used. Odviously I can booty-fab something, but I'm wondering if Warn or MM have a product specifically for this app. Didn't see anything on either website. (Other than a Warn soft case... not sure this would be effective).

I suppose I could just pull the winch when not wheeling, but this would get annoying.

you could always get the hitch mount winch,im sure it would not be hard to mount a milemarker to this.ive heard good and bad on milemarker.i would not hesitate to buy one if i only used it in dry weather 2 or 3 times a year

find a used Warn, you won't lose much money on it if you resell it, unlike the MM.

I just cut a plastic garbage back and put it neatly around the winch.

1 to 5 times a year is probably more use than most winches you'll see around...

oh, and you know that the cheap MM are permanent magnets, not series-wound, right?

The new Ramsey REP winches are pretty good too, and decently priced.

I'm sure you can find a better price than Summit though

When the time comes I'll probably get a T-Max EW9000.

I have the MM9000. Slow and steady but it does the job. I picked up off craig's list for $300 so I thought "why not"? So far so good but I dont exactly jump right outta my pants and offer to winch someone out if there is a warn in the group.

**Especially being that 8k pull is REALLY borderline for getting "unstuck" in an 80

How about a milemarker hydraulic? If you are worried about rust, these are bomb-proof. I had a warn winch once and it rusted out within 3 years. Perhaps they have improved the weatherproofing since then, but it really turned me off warns. The milemarker has nothing on it that will rust, and feels like an industrial quality hydraulic. They are damn slow, but if you are only using it 5 times per year...

2nd: what are the advantages of an integrated selonoid?
I've been wondering this for a while, just havn't asked (didn't want to sound stupid, oh well).

I have both types of winches (Warn & MM)on two diff 80s. Recently, I took the MM winch apart just to see how everything looked internally. The PO used the MM winch with Synthetic rope. It seemed that the rope trapped moisture on the drum and that caused some mild corrosion. There was no water intrusion and everything looked good on the inside. I've never put this winch to test but I know that the PO has. The vehicle came from Chicago and I'd guess the winch to be about one year old and I was surprised to see the chrome horizontal bars were also had mild corrosion. I can't remember the capacity of this winch unfortunately!

The motor is a series wound motor I believe but forgot to check.

How many 80 series have you seen with a receiver on the front of the truck?
