80 Series Tailgate Lid “For Sale Thread”

Splitting this thread off from the original tailgate "For Sale" thread to make the 80 series info easier to find.
Most of the generic info is in the multiple pages of the original thread (also stickied, now called the 60 series thread), but I want to make any 80 info easier to find.

First up, and probably most importantly, is the waiting list for the 80 folks:

Quote:
The wait list is gone, I'm working in real time on the 80 lids now, thanks to everyone for the patience and support.

Everything else stays the same, but questions and info for the 80 stuff have a home here now.

Got my tailgate and it is awesome. Kevin definitely came up with a great project. I would up buying one of his quasi-prototype lids with PC and paint. I also opted for the grip panel and the stainless cam latches.

The install

Carpet off and the template penned on with a sharpie and got the cutting wheel ready

The wheel sucked, so I went out and bought a new reciprocating saw. Big Hole!

I fitted and started to put all the hardware on, and a problem arose. The hole in the center by the latch/handle area didn't line up as that hole isn't centered up cuz of the handle/latch assembly. After some head scratching, it looked like that Kevin assembled the lid with the top piece backwards. If I flipped the lid upside down, the holes matched up.

Easy fix though, just drilled a new hole

SWEET!

Almost anyway, what year tailgate is this?
That hole is indeed off-center, but It's actually impossible to assemble the lid backwards due to the template used.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

'94 tailgate. If you flipped the lid over with the lid door facing down, all the holes lined up perfect. Nothing a drill bit couldn't fix I did have to re-cycle a longer allen head screw off my 40 cuz that part I drilled into sat a little lower and the screws that came with the tailgate were just a wee bit too short for that spot.

After you you cut and drilled the top part, did you maybe weld the underside lip on the wrong side? With the one off center hole, there would definitely be one side of the lid that had to face out in order to have that one stray hole line up.

Anyway, it all worked out. Just giving you a bit of feedback.

Now I gotta see how much junk I can stuff in there

As I lay awake thinking about this last night, I realized that since this was the older powder coat sample one, it might be that my welding jig was not the current version during it's construction.
It used to be that I had to pay special attention to that hole, but now the jig uses that specific hole as a referencing mark so that it wont fit unless it's in the right place.
Oh, well, like you say, no biggie I guess, still bugs me though.
Does your replacement bolt match the other ones perfectly? I've got longer versions of the normal bolts that I could send out to you.

Nah, the screw I used looks exactly like the ones you included, just it's a metric thread.

The lid is an absolutely awesome addition to my 80, kudos Those stainless latches are great, well worth the extra $$$$$

Kevin,

Absolutely love my tailgate storage on my 60, but I sold it and it's headed to North Carolina...

I bought a 94 fzj80 to replace it so I need to get on this list now!

Thanks a bunch!

The waiting starts again!

Just when I'm getting the 60 list under control.
I'm really cranking on the 80s now though, I keep the list here up to the minute.

Yes, but I also have a proto type - no big deal a simple hole drilled and thats is

This is a fantastic product and build quality - it was very easy to install

Kevin you have out done yourself

I shot a fun and simple install video I will edit and post this week.

Thanks again!

Just so you guys know, Pasquale is just being nice and not posting his video yet since he is having a problem with the plastic.
As he mentioned, he has a proto lid from quite awhile ago that is one of the ones my OLD plastic supplier screwed me on by deciding to start selling me the non-marine HDPE instead of the marine stuff (for the same price of course).

I'm going to get him set up with a new piece of plastic and then we can see the pretty video.
(Or he can post up and show everyone what non-marine plastic does in the sun....)

That's just too cool, I've got to link that from my install page, and the install thread here as well.
