Shooting question for the locals

My GF's 16 y/o brother is having trouble at school and at home. The "father" is a worthless drunk and the mother may as well be catatonic. My GF is moving out of the mother's house because she's sick of putting up with her mother's shit (moved in in the first place to take care of her mother since her father smacked her mother around). Anyway, her brother never gets a chance to leave the house so I was thinking that taking him to a trap shoot might be a good distraction for him. Get him out of the house, outside, doing something he hasn't done before. Figured the GF and me would take him up to Dear Park, I'd show him the basics of how to safely handle a long gun, shooting basics, and let him shoot a few rounds from my 12ga if it looks like he can comfortably handle it.

My question is, since neither the GF or me are his legal guardian and he's under 18, is this even legal, or will we have to wait until he's 18?

I am not 100% sure, but I can tell you that with our Boy Scouts which are his age, we do get a permission slip, but I am not sure it is a BSA policy or local, shooting at 16 is not an issue though, you should be able to ask the local Rod and Gun Club. Sound like he needs a Big Brother!

I'll have to check around and find out. What he REALLY needs is a damn distraction and a way to get out of that house.
