1966 FJ 40, L.A. CA. Trade for 80 Series or ??
SOLD - To a happy new owner in Texas.
It will definitely be missed.
1966 FJ40, built as per my sig line. By no means is this a restoration vehicle, but this is a solid 40. It runs, drives great, tracks straight, and is overall just plain fun to drive. You can actually fit six people in this rig; I know, because I have done it often.
UPDATE: ***PRICE REDUCED*** I am looking to trade for an 80 series, can be lifted or stock. Otherwise I will take $4900.00 cash for the 40 (Reduced from $6500.00).
UPDATE #2: I will also add in a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee for the right 80 series. See post #27 below for details.
UPDATE #3: Pictures of the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee below post #27.
History:
The truck was purchased by my dad around 10 years ago. Since it was purchased, both my dad and I had installed the Skyjacker lift, the SM420 transmission, the Orion transfer case and the Lock Right locker in the rear.
This 40 has been a lifesaver, almost literally. Any time one of my other vehicles has had any issues, this one always comes through for me. Not once has it failed me yet! I really do not want to get rid of it (sentimental family vehicle, and solid drive train) but I need a vehicle I can take on long road trips (above 60mph, that is) so that I can wheel it when I reach my destination. Also, I have four kids and one on the way , so I will need the extra seating.
About 3 years ago, I bought it from my dad. Since I have owned it, I have performed the following repairs where noted below.
Here are a couple links to pictures I posted on Mud:
Pics:
IH8MUD Forums - View Single Post - Artistic Cruiser Pics
Paint job (will mention in "The BAD" below):
http://forum.ih8mud.com/paint-body/2...-now-what.html
Link to the transfer shift fork repair:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...xle-still.html
The GOOD:
- SBC 327; new water pump.
- Headers w/ "cherry bomb" mufflers.
- SM420 Trans. This was rebuilt for the PO (my dad) less than 500 miles ago, by a transmission shop.
- Orion transfer case (has about 700 miles on it), with new shifter fork (there is a writeup on that; my dad did not install the fork into the collar, but outside of the groove; link posted above).
- Lock Right locker in rear; installed professionally about 500 miles ago.
- New (long side) axle shaft, along with all new bearings/seals in the rear; about 800 miles ago.
- 4" Skyjacker lift; homemade shackles (1.25" over stock length).
- New radiator from radiator barn (HD version).
- New brake master cylinder (about 700 miles ago).
- New clutch master cylinder/slave unit (full setup from Spectre Off Road, Part Number 018-01-KIT)
- Centerforce clutch (about 2,000 miles on it)
- All new brake shoes. Drums have plenty of lining left.
- Honed / adjusted all brake cylinders (there are eight of them!)
- Brand-new 33" Cooper Discoverer tires; two 33" BFG A/T spares (one is mounted and on the rear) with good tread.
- Front seats are in great condition, grafted in from (I think) an Acura.
- Hard top is currently installed.
- Bikini top.
- Soft doors.
- Oil/filter change less than 100 miles ago.
- Air filter change less than 100 miles ago.
- Rear diff, transfer case and transmission fluid replaced less than 100 miles ago.
The BAD:
- Rust is present on the outside and bottom of the doors and the rear sill (just below the tailgate) and a few other areas on the tub; the frame, however, is not rusted and is straight.
- New (to me) hood is from another mudder; painted, but the dent was not removed (PO incident where the hood flew up against his windshield - same as what happened to my old hood from a PO) - I still have the original two-piece hood, but it is dented as well.
- Paint job was quick and rough on the top and parts of the tub; I would definitely suggest a new paint job.
- Windshield has a spider-web crack on the passenger side, lower corner. Another mudder local to me makes these; only the original seal will need to be replaced, as is customary when replacing a windshield.
+ The glass on the driver-side door needs to be completely replaced (hence the reason the PO bought soft doors, which are also part of the deal).
- The gear on the driver side window does not engage when window is down; you have to pull up about two inches, then it grabs and rolls up.
- The inner fenders were cut by the PO to accommodate the headers.
- There is no speedometer cable; it failed about 2,000 miles ago; mileage is therefore affected, and not accurate (Reads 89,xxx mi.).
I will take pictures of anything you need so that you can make an informed decision. I will disclose any and all information related to the condition of the vehicle, to the best of my knowledge.
Thank you for your consideration,
Sean

Does it have power steering or brakes? What gears are in the diffs?
Did you have to cut the drive shafts for the Orion, or did you swap the Orion in place of the stock t case?
Great looking rig!
Too bad you have to get rid of it. I know what that is like having to get rid of something that is sentimental between you and your dad.
Hard decision.

No power steering, and no power brakes.
Stock gearing in the diffs, Lock Right in the rear.

The drive shafts did not need to be cut. Oddly enough, I just swapped the front with the rear, and rear to the front; perfect fit.

It really is a hard decision; I really do not need to get rid of it, but I know that my future plans will force me to into something a little more practical, as I will be needing to commute.

Here is one interior shot.
The only problem with getting a motorcycle is that I can not fit my whole family on it; and I can't "wheel" it once I get to where I'm going. Otherwise, I have to tow the 40 behind the Sequoia to wheel it at long distances. If I still lived in Menifee (near Hemet, north of Temecula) I would not even consider selling it, since the property I lived at was dirt and rocks on 3 acres.
I also have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I am selling; I plan on using that as a commuter until I get my 40 traded out.
I am not trying to sell this on Craigslist, Autotrader or Ebay; I would rather it go to another enthusiast who could truly enjoy this for what it is.

Oh man, I hear ya. Those first pix w/the kids look like hella fun. Curious what the lil rocket-cones are are the rear bumper-ettes?
If I hadn't made my BIL a deal on my spare 60 I'd be pimping it out to ya, with a lift & cash for to trade. Hit me w/your e addy if at all interested.

I will eventually miss getting comments on those bumperettes; I am not sure if they came stock like this, or what.
PM sent.

Here are some more exterior shots, along with as many problem areas I could find. Again, I want to fully disclose everything I can find that will assist those in making a sound decision.
The top pic shows all of the problem areas that I could find. I listed the flywheel as a problem area since there is no cover, and it is missing one tooth (the missing tooth does not affect starting, however).
The bottom pic shows in detail the shackles that are used on this rig; they are 1.25" longer than stock (stock = 2.75" IIRC). These allow for more flexibility on the trail, and increased the lift by approximately .625".
Otherwise, the rest of the following pictures are WYSIWYG.

More shots...
You can see where the speedometer cable is missing. I have not bought a new one since I used my GPS unit to track my speed. By the way, I found that top speed is 62MPH. Not bad, eh?
I focused on the right rear jumpseat because it has a couple minor tears in the original fabric, one of which was repaired to hinder tearing.

So am I. Great 60, I just have to think about the seven of us fitting into whatever vehicle I get.
Thanks for checking in, Sam.

Yes, it does. I disconnected it because I was updating the hardware. The nuts were not the nylex locking sort, so they would loosen frequently.
In one of the pictures, you should see a driveshaft behind the Cruiser.
Thank you.

It's Friday! The weekend is a great time to stop by and take a look, if you live locally; out-of-town visitors also welcome. Test-drive her and see what you think.

I appreciate the offer, and would like to see some photos, just based on the description alone.
Let me point out at this time that I do live in California.

For the right 80 series, I will add in a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, as I had it in mind to sell the Jeep to fund any repairs / lift kits / rims & tires to get it where I want it.
Having said that, if there is an interest, I would be willing to "throw in" a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee to sweeten the deal.
The Jeep has a V8 with 123,xxx miles, full-time 4wd, stock with cloth seats. This is the vehicle that I currently use as a daily driver, registered until June, 2010. For those interested, I will post up pictures of the Jeep.
Edit: Let me also add that I am not looking to get a perfectly clean rig out of this, it can have small dents and scratches; seats can be torn / worn.

And now, for the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is also part of the deal, for the right 80 series:
123,xxx miles, 5.2L V8, 4WD (Hi/Lo), Full-time 4WD, Auto Trans, A/C (problematic switches, but works only in defrost mode), PDL (not working), PW, Tow Package, Pioneer Deck, Aftermarket Speakers, Amplifier, All Stock drivetrain, not lifted.
Front brake pads with less than 500 miles on them, rear brakes (drum) need to be serviced. Interior is not perfect, but there are no tears in the upholstery and it cleans up well.
Reminder: This is included with the FJ40 in trade for the right 80 series. I am not looking to make a profit here; I just want the right vehicle for my family, and capability as an expedition rig.
