1977 Stock FJ40 (Greensboro, NC)

*SOLD*SOLD*SOLD** For Sale: Stock 1977 Toyota FJ40 with 66,800 original miles. *SOLD*SOLD*SOLD*

Link to online pics: Picasa Web Albums - Rice - 1977 FJ40

Location: Greensboro, NC

Asking Price: $7850

Vehicle Details:

Engine: Stock 4.2 Liter 2F engine. Not rebuilt. Strong compression, no oil burn, no knocks. Starts and runs well. Exhaust has a "tick" some place close to exhuast manifold. Stock carburator with all emission control systems intact. The exhaust is not original and was not routed correctly (i.e. was not run above the skid plate). If I were keeping the vehicle I think this is something I would change. The engine runs cool on highway and in traffic.

Electrical: 100% functional. Lights, signals, charging system, ignition, wipers, gauges, horn, blower motor, and radio (AM, of course!) work as they should.

Brakes: 100%. Recent replacement of front calipers and pads using genuine Toyota parts. No known leaks, no uneven braking, no squeeks, no shimmies or shakes.

Wheels and Tires: 98%. Super looking stock wheels with stock centers. The tires are in great shape with >90% tread. Some of the black paint from the centers has faded away.

Steering: 100%. Original steering (no power steering) and is still very tight. No road wander, no vibrations, no pull to one side, and no death wobble.

Drivetrain: 100%. 4 speed shifts well, clutch feels good, 4WD, linkages, and locking hubs work as they should. No rear end, transmission, or transfer case whine or noise. The drivetrain is very quiet.

Seats and soft surfaces: 95%. There is one tear on the driver side seat (see pic). The passenger seat and the rear jump seats are in perfect condition. The dash pad and knee pads are perfect and have no cracks. The headliner is perfect with no rips, stains, dirt, or places where it has come loose.

Heating system: 90%. Blower, defroster, and the heater lever (used to redirect air) all work well. The valve that controls water circulation to the heater appears to be seized. I don't know if the problem is in the valve or in the cable. No leaks in the system.

A/C system: 100%. i.e the windows work as they should.

Frame: 98%. Very solid. The only place I have noticed is the rear braces that connect between the frame and the rear bumper are pitted. I have not found any other evidence of frame rust or damage.

Body: 95%. I want to be very careful not to make this into anything it isn't. The body of the FJ is in really good shape but it is not perfect. The red you see in the pics is all original. It has never had a repaint. Outside paint is showing signs of it age with some oxidation but, again, for original looks pretty good. I took pics of the places rust bubbles are coming up, namely the right fender where the underside fender brace mounts to the fender and on the left fender where the signal light mounts. The doors have a couple spots you can see in the pics, and there are some small bubbles where the fender and the side bib meet. The rear sill was replaced and right now is only primed. Whoever did the sill work did a very nice job. The top appears to have never been removed and is in super condition. The fiberglass gelcoat and seal around the gutter look great. The inside paint still has a nice shine. It appears that at some point the clutch master leaked into the cab and stripped some paint on the inside firewall. I took pics of the inside with the rubber floor mat removed but the mat comes with the vehicle. The center console is scuffed up and could use repainting. Sorry, I don't know the story behind the hood ornament.

Final remarks: I'm sure as I write this I've left something out. Please contact me and ask if items here are not covered. I would love to keep this cruiser but my wife and I are changing some things as we prepare for "a family" plus I still have a '74 FJ we plan to keep for a while. I am the 3rd owner of this cruiser but have not been able to discover any evidence of abuse. Touch-up paint is still in the glove box, the tool kit is complete and the jack is in place.

Again, questions? Please ask. Thanks.

Now that's one nice cruiser with an even nicer price. You should have no problem selling that.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I hope the new home it finds will make them happy.

FYI: It probably doesn't need mentioning but the cruiser has a clear title.

Whew, nice rig. Wish I didn't have so many already (too many projects, not enough time)! Happy sales!

Quick update:

I had mentioned to several folks who had emailed or called that the cruiser was being housed at my farm 45 minutes North of Greensboro. That was going to be a headache for anyone coming in from out of town so today the wife and I went up to get some blackberries and brought the cruiser back to Greensboro.

In addition, several people have asked for more pics. I apologize that a few of them are redundant but I took another batch and just posted them online. For the undercarriage pics I tried to focus on things like frame rails, spring hangers and body mounts and the other pics were rather random.

Here is the pic link again: Picasa Web Albums - Rice - 1977 FJ40

Thanks again for all the positive feedback.

Rice

I drooled over it for a couple hours yesterday....and ultimately had to pass for no other reason than timing and there was a buyer waiting on the wings pending my decision. It is a very nice truck and i believe its found a new loving home not in my garage :(

Super Nice seller and vehicle!!

Hi all.

Latest Update:

The current plan is the 40 will be driving to his new home in TN on Monday. I will leave the ad up until then just in case the TN buyer has second (third, fourth, ... ) thoughts before then. I will report back here one way or the other.

Thanks for the kind words, Jason. It was great chatting with both of you and getting to connect with folks who know and love cruisers. I know it belongs in chat but I put the 40 for sale on MUD feeling confident it would find a best home possible here rather than someone who wouldn't be able to see it for what it was and chop it up. I know I don't get a vote once it's gone but it's nice to hope.

Hood Ornament! It's from a 1957 Studebaker who for many years made a car called a Land Cruiser. Ta Dah.

FINAL UPDATE: Cruiser is making its way to TN. Yes, I shed a tear.

A super special thanks to Jason, Eric, and Steve for everything. All three of you are on my list to buy a cold one. How about later this week?

FYI to you guys ... I am ashamed to say I did pull the dist cap when looking for the problem to be sure the rotor button wasn't cracked but never looked under the dust cap to see the spring holding the points closed was broken. An $8 set of points and she was off. I'm fairly convinced that was even the original set of points!

Again, you guys are awesome. PM me so we can decide on the cold brew time.

Michael ... did you get my phone message? What's the update? Let me know when you get home.

Thats great, Im glad everything worked out and Mike is on his way, I have to say that this was one of the nicest 40's I have ever layed my eyes on.....the pictures werent even close to showing what an awesome find this was. It broke my heart to see this pristine, unmolested 40, 2 miles from my door for sale at a time when I couldnt have been further from being in the market for another one.

Hey guys,

A special thanks goes out to Jason, Eric, Steve, and a new friend Rice. Just when you hear the world is going to "h@#$" comes four total strangers, no fellow cruiserheads. Guys I cannot say enough and if you could have been with me driving off into the sunset and crossing the Appalachians and driving it to East Tenn. words cannot explain, it was like some of the pictures you see on here. Not that I had the money with a wife and two small kids but after having four of these in the past and selling them putting the money in a special mason jar for this day and searching them out for twenty years or so I was not going to pass on this one. To Jason, Eric, Steve, and especially Rice (I guess A.P. Physics teachers and P.E. teachers can get along,) guys there is a cooler full in the mountains of Northeast Tenn. if you are ever up this way. To my two small boys I only hope they grow to appreciate the FJ40!
