Wanted- Diesel Cruiser or Toyota

Looking for a diesel Cruiser that is in the US or can be legally imported. No rust buckets please. Would prefer a bj40,bj42, or bj70. Am really leaning toward the bj70 but hard to find good one that is importable.

Also would consider bj60 or hj60 and Cruiser diesel conversions.

Don't have a problem with rhd's.

Also heard that it was easy to drop in a L series diesel in a 4 cyl. Toyota pickup. But heard that there there was problems with the engine heads. Might be interested in such a vehicle if could learn a little more on them and how durable the engine is.

You can email me (Joshua) at

40 diesels are easy to find in the US. Its all the others that are a problem.

I have considered importing one when I saw this:

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...lig010807b.htm

The 60 series Land Cruiser seems eligible as BJ60's and HJ60's are:

1) substantially similar to a motor vehicle of the same model year that was manufactured for sale in the United States and certified by its manufacturer as complying with all applicable FMVSS (Federal motor vehicle safety standard).

2) And is capable of being readily altered to comply with all applicable FMVSS.

The 70's were never imported to the US so probably alot harder to do so.

Am familiar with the import 25 year rule. The BJ70 I am looking for was imported into canada from 1985 to (I think) 1988. It was a LHD. It is the only 70 series that can be imported easily. Fairly rare. I have seem a few in the States but they are petty rusty. West Coast Cruisers has one but it has had a lot done to it considering mileage.

Also to clarify things, the diesel conversions I would consider would be on the US side. Did some on site research- do not want a toyota pickup with a L series diesel in it! Sounds like more headaches then worth.

A bj40 or 42 is OK. Most I have seem are out of my budget. Cruiser doesn't need to have a lot of modifications. Stock is just fine.

Any Canadian-spec BJ70 can be imported. Finding a clean one will be tough to near impossible, unless you are willing to pay for it. Most of us that have them know what they have. I would not let the rust stop you from getting a decent price rig. As long as the frame and engine are good, you can replace panels.

Mine has some nice rot on the rear quarters. But I'll replace them. The rest of the truck is pretty decent- great engine, good frame, etc. Prolly won't ever be a show truck, but good for a DD/Trail rig. And, I'm still getting 20mpg on bio, regardless of whether the rust is there or not.

Best of luck to you though.

I've got a nice 1983 FJ60 converted to 3b diesel/5 speed for sale. It was originally a Colorado truck, so it is very easy for you to import back to the US. Email me brodiej@hotmail.com for more info.
