84 xtracab - $2300 - Denver

1984 Toyota XtraCab 4x4 pickup 180k miles $2300

Spec:
carbed 22R - rebuilt within 6 years - 40k miles?
5 speed manual trany
solid front axle
twist-yer-own hubs (stock)
Yokahama Geolander 235/75 R15s w/ ~15% tread & FULLSIZE spare
brake job w/ 5k miles
radiator rodded out w/10k miles

Mileage: ~15 town - 25 highway

Modifications/important maintenance considerations:
Dual Mikuni sidedraft carburetors w/ K&N open air filter
Custom header pipes & exhaust - brand unknown
Dual battery conversion w/ possible wiring loom for cab-over camper (installed when I bought it w/out camper)
Flex-a-lite electric fan conversion
Run w/ larger NAPA GOLD (wix) Ford Universal filters last 5 oil changes (at 6mos/ 5-8k miles)
Oil ALWAYS changed with Castrol Syntec full-synth oil
Annual service items:
NGK plugs changed - needed or not
Filter cleaned & re-oiled (K&N say 50k miles in regular driving is reasonable)
Valves adjusted
Chassis greased

I've got a folder full of NAPA reciepts, service reciepts on the things I couldn't do myself and an xcel spreadsheet with mileages, dates and contact info for all major and most minor work done. Most of the tough stuff - carb adjustment & sync, brake job - was done by Flagstaff 4x4 in Flag, AZ.

Description:
This truck has been my buddy for going on 6 years now. It's a former Montana truck, you can see the skin cancer in the photos. It's got slight body damage in the front left quarter panel (If I'd had half-doors it wouldn't have happened!) and has been missing the front bumper fascia since I bought the truck (all the easier to install a winch bumper). It doesn't suffer from the "saggy rear" syndrome you see in many 'yotas of this age and everything except the driver's side window crank (stripped) is functional with regard to body parts (doors, locks, tailgate). It's a strong runner with a manual choke. The carb/exhaust combo insures it's more powerful than it should be with a 22r. It never once refused to start on a cold day and behaves itself admirably in snow and ice with these tires (provided you've got a little weight in the back, of course). The front end axle seals are bad, it could use an overhaul if you plan on spending time with the hubs locked in (and why wouldn't you?). I don't have the facilities to do the work, but the mileage since they went tango has been primarily 2wd with the hubs out. I always wanted to install an ARB air locker, but that's your call!

I bought this truck in '00 expressly because it's the best combination of factory parts you'll find on a solid-axle Toyota. It has the fully-gusseted front end ('84-'85 only) and the stoutest of Toyota's 5-speed manual trannies, while it's carburated, avoiding possible early EFI glitches of some '85s. The carbs have never given me trouble (the induction noise is wonderful, too!), but could be pretty effortlessly swapped to stock. You can see how clear the engine compartment is with them, though. Valve adjustments are a breeze! I always intended to continue upgrades to it, but I've since gotten into other things (a wife, for one) and don't find myself driving it nearly as much as before. It breaks my heart to see it sit and it could be a solid, reliable base for a buildup OR a wonderful daily driver (it was mine for 5 years). I'd like to see it go to someone who knows its worth and will drive it as intended. I want to "Keep it in the family," if you will.

Email me through the board or PM me if you're interested!
