My 79 40

Well I am thinking I may be able to drive this thing in the next couple months after having it off the road since I have owned it. The main things I have left to do are install the power steering (I want to rattle can the inner fenders first) and finish upholstering the seats. These are some pictures I had to take for the insurance company.

I have since finished assembling the bib with new emblem and powder coated screen and lots of shiny new parts. I have always wanted to work on a vehicle in my living room.

Can't wait to drive it to a meeting.

Jon, The 40 looks great. Looks like you've done an excellent job on it. Hope to see it out and about soon. Out of curiosity, who did you get your insurance thru ?

Wow!!!! That looks almost as nice as my 40 (except for the dents, rust, and faded paint).

That is a beauty! Do you have any before pictures or was it that rust free and beautiful when you got it?

Damn! The shininess has burned my retinas!

Thats maybe one of the nicest looking 40s I've ever seen. Nice work Jon!

Bob, with a little polish, bondo and paint....... Yours is beautiful too, just in a "I drive it over boulders and through trees" sorta way.... You have that extra tub, right?

I'll post some before pictures later. I do have some in the "member's rides" section.

I will say one thing I have learned a great deal with this project and there's a lot of stuff I would have done differently. I did cut a lot of corners like I wish I had pulled the front fenders for paint but the cost of the paint was already way over budget. I really didn't have much to spend. But I am very happy with what I got for my money.

I really just want to get this on the road. I have own 2 40's in the last 5 years an really only driven them to and from IPOR once each. They rest of them time they have been torn apart in one garage or another.

I purchased the insurance through Modern American Insurance via USAA. It is cost me 82.00 a year for a 6k miles/year and 20k vehicle coverage, must be garage kept, not left alone in parking lot (I guess I'll have to call into meetings from the parking lot) and some other crap.

Once I get the interior together I will post some pictures. I have a ton of parts from you to install.

Here are some pics from when I first got the truck. Actually by this time I had removed the crappy chrome wheels, the sheep skin seat covers and the blue shag from the back.

If I ever do this again I would do more research on the tub. This one is nice but it is not correct, it was missing most the captured nuts, the ones it did have were in the wrong place and it is missing the entry holes for the rear marker lights etc etc. Additionally, while the installer did a good job overall the attention to detail was lacking. The guy I had install all the captured nuts cleaned up the floor pans, fixed the radio hole, replaced all the hardtop and door weather stripping. I wish I had used him for all the metal work.

Nah, I don't hate early trucks I just dislike them immensely.

Now an old truck with a V8 or 2F, Saginaw, Disc Brakes, Upgraded elec sys, 5speed or Auto trans, tilt column and late model and that rocks!

Just my opinion. No flames please. If you love your old afflicted pile of monkey shit, god bless you and the horse you rode in on too.

Harumph. A real man drives with drum brakes, manual steering, bench seat, F engine, three-on-the-tree, and he likes it!

Power steering and A/C sure would be nice though.

A real man with a death wish maybe. Do you know how hard it was to sip my Latte, steer and shift your truck while test driving it. They could have at least put the shifter in the right place.

Help me put mini truck power steering in and I'll forget you said that.

Dave, sounds like you need to compile the parts needed and call a tech day at your house. Dale and I put mine in over one weekend. With my patented rivet remover, it's faster now. At some point I'll be going to '62 box steering and my mini box and mount can be yours for a reasonable price. Don't know what timeframe you have in mind...

I recommend the Dorry pump and box mounts. I feel that they are the best. May be time for you to start your research.
