We have room.
25th then?
John Smith?
Dan?
Sebastian?
Felix?
Bueller?
Lets get some consensus of what works best and then set the day in stone.

I'm still on alternative walk assist, so not sure how much hands on I can do. The bones are taking a verrrry long time to knit. That said, I'm open for pretty much anytime.
By eye protection, do mean everyone needs their own welding helmet? I have brazing goggles, but no helmet.

It looks like the 25th is working for everyone so that looks like the date to do it. I have an extra welding helmet I can bring for someone to borrow. Welding helmets are very cheap and without one you are not going to be able to observe anyone welding. Unless they have become more expensive like everything else you should be able to pickup a shade 10 helmet for around $20.
Dan, you can borrow my extra helmet if you come as your oxyfuel goggles are probably only shade 5. If Dan does not show it is open to whoever does not have one. I can bring an extra set of welding gloves also.

John Smith is right, to get anything out of this, you really need to have a helmet, gloves, clear eye protection and ear protection as well as a good work clothes with out any man made fabrics.
This is going to make it so that you can observe and then when it's your turn, step right in for some torch time.
If you want to come and watch from the fringes, that is fine to not bring a helmet. BUT, if you want to learn to weld, bring a helmet!
I used to have a box of them but got rid of anything extra when I moved to CA.
Dan, I'll make every reasonable accommodation to get you into to some torch time. I have several wheeled stools in my shop that you can sit on. I can also set up a lower level workstation. Been there and done that with injuries/surgery
-Stumbaugh
PS Lets try to get a head count of who wants to go.
PSPS John, what do you think about getting some steel so that each guy gets a few coupons to work with and a small piece to run some beads on? Maybe some 1/8th x 2" that we can chop up into pieces? I used to have several tons of steel but only have a few pieces of scrap at this point. I do have enough for instruction, but not enough for each guy.

Thanks, John (both). Will you be concentrating on mig? I've done some gas and arc a few years back at a course that's no longer offered at Wheaton High.
We'll need an address/directions that you can pm us if you like once all is nailed down.
At worst, if I'm still in my open toed surgical shoe, I'll figure out a cover for it, at best, the chair sounds great.

Dan,
No worries man. I've been nursing a broken thumb for the last month and I've been a left knee gimp since 1996 so I know what your going through.
How about just wrapping your cast in a welding jacket? If you got a set of welding sleeves you could stick your toes in the upper part of the sleeve and wrap it up in tape.
Yes, the concentration is MIG basic skills with an emphasis on sheet metal welding for rust repair.
My goal is to get people pointed in the right direction so that they can take it from there and learn welding as a hobby.

I will probably stop by and can help out. No sandals? I personally only weld in flip flops. More stylish... except when those hot things fall on your toes...
I learned my lesson from welding and proper protection. The sunburns you get are the pits! Ouch. more of a problem with Stick than Tig welding.
If anyone has access or knows anyone at a construction site, they usually trash tons of steel after a job. perfect for practice.

Let me see what I have in my scrap pile. I think I may have some 1/8th x 2" flat bar we can use. Otherwise, I am going to Tractor Supply tomorrow and can pickup a length of flat bar for us. What I have is probably pretty rusty but I will check. I can bring my welding blanket for Dan to cover his foot with.
Edit, I just checked the Tractor Supply Web site and they have small window flip helmets for $19.99 and large window non-flip or flip for $26.99.
Tractor Supply Company - Hobart Welding Helmet, #10 Fixed Shade, Flip Front
Tractor Supply Company - Hobart Weldit Standard Fixed Shade Welding Helmet, 4 1/2 x 5 1/4 in Lens
As I stated earlier I am going to TSC tomorrow and I will buy anyone who needs one a helmet if you will pay me back at the tech day. They usually have plenty in stock. Post up ASAP if you want me to pick you one up. Only post up if you will take any helmet they have at one of the price points above. I will try to honor your preference of flip or large window but I am bound by what they have in stock. If you are picky about your helmet like I am please buy your own so you are not upset if you don't get exactly what you want. I am doing this as a favor as I know most of us live nowhere near a TSC.

The 25th sounds good. I've got some scrap sheetmetal that I can bring. We'll see if you can break me of all my bad habits.

I'm in as well and will bring my own helmet and other necessary stuff. I'll also try to find some scrap metal as well. Just let me know where and when and if you need me to bring anything else.
Thanks,
Nick

Do you have to be a member to come out?
I can get bring some schedule 40 pipe whatever size you would like or meet up with some one and deliver some pipe and I have a lot of sheet metal (20 gage I think). Welding around pipe is another beast.
I can also bring my POS 110V flux core mig.
I’ll deliver some pipe to someone in tysons corner area sometime if you would like.

Chris,
CLCC tech day, but you are welcome to come as a non member. Heck, I've not been an active member of CLCC for almost 10 years!
Bring some schedule 40 but no need to bring your welder.

How does 2 or 3pm sound?
We could hit the Old Brouge right down the street afterwards for a beer?

Yeah, John, I don't know what you have in mind, but I think that that's kind of a late start. Some of us have a good ways to travel. How about 11ish?

Three hours is max for a class like this, most people can't focus for more than 45 minutes...anything longer and people with start to check out. I've been to enough 8 hour long classes to see that...
I think if we start at 3, have an hour of lecture and two hours of lab, that will be enough for most folks to handle...not to mention the cold. More than 3 hours out there and I'll be a zombie.
What we can't cover in this time frame will be better addressed on another day.
Thoughts?

John, can we start earlier? If everything goes well, I may not make it home until 7-8 pm, which is a bit late.

Dave,
My wife signed up the kids for a swim lesson right smack in the middle of the day. I won't even be getting home until around 2 or 2:30. I'll need some time to get setup.

Oh yea. I want to do another at some other point on F/2F Super Tune ups and that will be very techy as well.
To be clear, this is a class. If you don't want to learn, don't come!
I'd also ad, that if your a competent welder, come and share your knowledge and perspectives. Maybe we could break up into groups during the lab if we could come up with another 110V welder (Miller, Hobart, Lincoln, Esab, preferable for ease of use during instruction).

We all want to learn, but how about another day when you don't have so many things to worry about? Those of us coming in from MD will have a long ride back so late in the day, I'm especially thinking of Bmore...

Sounds good to me. So, we're shooting for starting around 2-3PM? Let us know where/when you want us to meet up. I'm really looking forward to this tech-day. The super tune-up sounds interesting too.
Picking up my HH 187 this weekend, but probably won't get to do much with it until the electrician comes over and finishes wiring up the 220 in the garage. I'll be a hammer looking for nail once that things get switched on. Glad to be getting some advice before I get started.
