Thanks a bunch Colangut !!!
JDM, yup, will find they're stuff on eBay (eBait) from time to time. The bring in a lot of half cuts. Haven't had the pleasure of doing business with them yet but I'm sure it will happen. Oh yeah, shipping is going to be a real b*tch. Jimmeny Cricket, that motor looks like a pile of spaghetti. You gotta see how clean a Cummins 6bt goes into an FJ60. Have two of these build ups now. Learning a lot because both were done very different. Third time is the charm. Keep the links Cummin(s), Cahil (Sorry must have been a turbo diesel Freudian slip) __________________ ..... 67 Red FJ40 - SBC, Holly, NV4500, SOA 87 Blue FJ60 - Cummins 6BT, NV4500, OME, SUA ..... coupla' parts rigs too ... Here's a nice one:
I'm sorta committed to figuring out how to get a Mercedes OM-617 into the trucks we drive. The trans and transfer case are the issues. I can pick up good OM-617's for around $300. Much less than the Toyota diesels. Cahil P.S. There was an FJ60 on Craigslist with a OM-617 in it and sold for $13k a while ago. I missed it and was real disappointed. That would have been a great build up to make note from how it was done. P.S.S. Colangut - Next time your back East you gotta drive my Blue FJ60. You know the acceleration most cars have when you stomp on the gas pedal coming from a complete stop ??? Well that's what this truck has but while it's doing 55 mph and in 5th gear. The traffic pattern opens up and I stomp on it and I'm freakin' gone. __________________ ..... 67 Red FJ40 - SBC, Holly, NV4500, SOA 87 Blue FJ60 - Cummins 6BT, NV4500, OME, SUA ..... coupla' parts rigs too ... Cahill,
I'll be living in northern Va again this fall, can't wait to get back. I have an old friend who is a master Benz mechanic with 40 plus years of experience and who is a diesel guru, I'd love to get one of those motors in my truck. He did warn me that a first class rebuild is not cheap. I think the best way would be a lwb cruiser with a divorced transfercase. I think Brian? in Harrisonburg had a setup like this for sale last fall. I've thought about a FJ60 with a divorced mini truck case and a V6 mini rear because it's about the same width as a FJ60/62 front axle. Diesel here is almost six bucks a gallon, at that rate I'll be putting a 22RE in my next FJ40. -Stumbaugh |

The truck I was after sold in Marshall, VA or very close to that proximity.
Forget rebuilding OM-617. Way to pricey. Better off finding a good used one in a rotten body for cheap. My best, Cahil __________________ ..... 67 Red FJ40 - SBC, Holly, NV4500, SOA 87 Blue FJ60 - Cummins 6BT, NV4500, OME, SUA ..... coupla' parts rigs too ... |

John, putting a 22RE in an FJ40 is exactly what John Embrey did with my perfect, but frameshot '85 mini. Every last piece of drivetrain was transferred over. Even the dash! While it's no great shakes on the road, it's incredible offroad due to the twin tcases and John's driving.

I recently sold one of the 55's that I had along with the om617 and the adapter and minitruck transfercase. The best way I found to adapt everything together was to keep the mercedes automatic transmission and use the OTT adapter hooked up to the front of the toyota transfercase. Thus making the transfercase a divorced unit. Time and number of projects forced me to unload a few. I don't know if it would've had enough butt for the 55, but for a 40, it would've been fine.
I was going to put it into my hilux double cab, but the om617 is too long. the 4bt is too tall, and the 2lte that I had was scaring me. After doing lots of research, it seems like the 2lte like to crack the head once you get them in areas where you go faster than 100 km/hr (i.e. over 60 mph) bk __________________ 76fj40 77fj55 85fj60 00uzj100 90Hilux Crew Cab Diesel 07 5.7L Tundra DC "I spend most of my money on beer, land cruisers, and women...the rest I just waste" - Curran |
