Trail rig or resto rig? The black (maybe green) one for $6250 on Craigs List looked pretty good. It doesn't list discs or PS, but those are easy mods.

Would not be available because it would be mine.

I must be getting really old - the 40 on Craigs List is a '78 so it already has front discs.

Van,

Power steering did not become available on FJ40's until 1979 and even then, not all 79's have PS. Disc brakes started in 76 and all 76 model year trucks have discs (9 of 75 and newer).

Many earlier trucks are upgraded to have PS and discs but not always safely or cleanly. I see a lot of very scary power steering mods done with less than professional welds. This is seriouse, it could kill you if done wrong. A truck with booger welds on the power steering is no great find at any price.

Given the rarity of FJ40's and how few are for sale at any given time, I'd focus on finding the cleanest truck vs. one with PS. You could always add that later, same goes for disc brakes (note - it's much easier to add discs to a truck that came with a brake booster so 71 to 75 are pretty easy to convert where the 70 and older rigs that don't have a booster take a bit more work).

If you find a clean 73 to 75 for a good price, I'd buy it even with out PS or Discs as they are great trucks too. You could have a guy like Ryan Bascom do the conversions for you.

Donny Figliozzi in Maryland has talked about selling his 79 FJ40, it has factory air and PS, old man emu, arb's, winch, etc. He'd probably want a few bucks for it, but it's a great truck. PM if you are interested, i'll give you his phone number.

Stumbaugh,

Good, experienced, common sense advise- appreciate it!! I am a crusier dad, so family, and personal safety are key. I will be keeping an eye on the details- clean welds, straight frame, good tires, cracked hoses, belts,etc... How much for the 79 FJ40 in MD?

Van,

I'll find out what Donny wants for his truck.

As far as welds go, a weld can look good and still not be good. This is especially true of mig welds where penetration can be poor. Many student welders are amazed to see what they percieve as a great looking weld fail horribly during destructive testing. Moral of the story, leave the welding of safety related items to the profession and certified welders - such as roll cages, seat mounts, seat belts, power steering, motor mounts etc. Leave the muffler work, rust restoration, rock sliders and tire carriers to the hack shade trees or what the welding trade calls "Gypsy Weldors".

Of course, if it's your own truck - have at it but if you going to pay someone, make sure they are what you think they are and your getting what you think you'r paying for - ask to see some certifcations! This goes for wrenching too, an ASE mechanic is likely to better on average than one who is not certified.

This is relevant in that many trucks have been through the hands of people with good intentions who's plans did not work out the way they intened - myself included. Everyone starts out somewhere. Ideally, you don't want to buy something that someone learned on or experimented with. Here is where sticking to a stock truck will pay out in spades vs buying one that is heavily modified or has had extensive "restoration" work.

Cavet Emptor! Buyer beware! Have someone like Ryan or Wisam look over anything your interested in buying. If nothing else, what they find will be valuable in creating leverage for price negotiations between you and the seller.

Just to add to John's good advice, club members are usually more than happy to help you look over a prospective cruiser. There are members all over the area and we're always up for looking at a cruiser.

You could always but Donny's 45 - very nice stock truck if it's still available.

Van: Give Don a call

301 370 8040 or you can email him at <dfigliozzi@comcast.net>,

Bob: He sold the 45 to a friend of ours named Bob.

Dave: How you been bro? How is that truck?

Off the top of my head, quick rundown on Don's 79:

Old Man Emu (the older type, better if you ask me, back when they made left and right springs) I actually sold him this kit when I upgraded to 36" TSL's

32" tires

Warn Winch with brush guard

ARB's - Installed by the trans shop they own

AC and factory toyota PS (AC needs a switch to work)

Non USA 4 speed with granny low and 3 speed tranfercase rebuilt by Mark Harris with all new parts (lower 2.33 ratio)

Dune Biege color - high quality paint

Restored back in 97 - down to frame with all new rubber and seals - they own a body shop. Currently getting some touch up work at the body shop right now. I think he's doing some work on the rockers? I recall that he bought a new rocker from Lance at IPOR and the body guy installed it.

Best to contact him for what he wants to sell it for.

Yea, sadly I once owned a nearly identical truck and did not keep it...sellers remorse 10 years later.

Where out in Winchester are you? I used to live out there in Stephens City and ride mountain bikes with the Sarah Zane crowd. Cool place. Too bad they closed their shop.

I checked out a 40 for sale in Kitty Hawk this past weekend. Asking price was $1600. Judging from the lights, I think it’s a 79 or later, although it has the old style doors (barn doors in the back). The frame was solid, at least in the rear. I didn’t check the front. V8, I think the stock 4 speed and aftermarket overdrive. The fender skirts have rust but the tub is aluminum and in nice shape. I don’t know the mechanical condition and it’s a little rough but between the tub and the overdrive alone may be worth the money. I scribbled down the number somewhere. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will dig it up.
