Selling the FJ40
This stinks!
![]() New house is squeezing us, so I am selling the cruiser before selling any of my bikes. Its going on craigslist..but I'll hold it for any of the crew that wants a trail beater. I paid $1000 for it when it wasn't running, got it running and poured another $1500 in parts and tires into it. I think $1700 is fair...what do you think? The ad will read: Rare 1971 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 in great shape. Camoflage!! Inline 6 cylinder engine, 3 speed transmission and transfer case, all in great working order. Runs smooth and straight. Weber 38 DGES carb and headers. Brakes were replaced on all wheels in the last year. Four wheel drive works. All gauges work, except for the speedometer. Horn and parking brake work too! Bestop soft top in almost new condition, no rips or tears. Soft doors, hard doors and half doors are included. Rear bench seat with seatbelts, new driver and passenger shoulder belts, 4 brand new 31x10.5 tires, stereo and speakers . Rust is not too bad for this vintage...limited to the rocker panels, rear corners and rear sill. The early 70’s FJ40s had better, thicker metal than the late 70’s or 80’s model years. The frame is solid. $1,700 __________________ '71 FJ40

Sell the bikes! You can always easily buy another bike, but finding a running 40 in this area is a challenge. Don't forget the rear axle rebuild!
And the boys, don't they just love the 40?Seriously, don't sell it. I felt the financial squeeze as well a while back, but my wife talked me out of selling it. It doesn't cost anything to let it sit. If you do decide to seriously sell, get as much as you can! (but don't sell it) - Dave __________________ 1970 FJ40 (AKA "Big Red") 2007 FJ Cruiser (Black Diamond ) |

Thanks Dave....you aren't making this any easier! Believe me..I've been over and over this...
I won't forget the rear axle rebuild! I plan to be a part of the club and to ride shotgun on a wheelin' trip in the near future. I just can't afford to keep this rig right now. My time and funds are crunched... __________________ '71 FJ40

Don't do it!!!! I would think that the time alone you've spent on the rig is worth more than $1,700.
This post scares me. Mostly because it would suck for you to sell your 40, but also because we just bought a house, too. I hope this isn't in my future. |

I agree with Dave..
Don't sell it, I sold my '72 and before it even got off the property, I went out and bought my '69. You'll end up buying another one later and have to dump alot of money into it. __________________ '69 fj40 CSC#103 A dry heat still cooks a turkey |

Bummer,
I really think you could get more for it though. I wouldn't be afraid to ask $3K for it, especially if its running nicely. $1700 seems a little low (anyone thinking "maybe I should buy it" is thinking, fjman - shut the hell up!) What do you think felix, more than $1700? __________________ 1986 fj60 - dents, rust and lots of character ![]() President - Capital Land Cruiser Club Before you lapse or surrender your life insurance, explore your options for a life settlement. Yep, same thing happened to me. Our A/C, a POS unit the builder put in, went belly up in less than 10 years. Our new super duper A/C was $4K. I feel your pain. I kept the 40 and I'm so glad I did. Everything worked out. Sorry I'm not making this easy for.

I took it off craigslist just now..you all are right, I need to think this over for a week or so before letting the frustration of money issues get the best of me.
Thanks for the wise counsel... I still may decide to sell it, but at least I'll know that I had good, solid reasons to do so ... maybe I should write all of those reasons down so that when I kick myself in the ass in a few years, I can recite the list. __________________ '71 FJ40

if you can live with fans for a while now that fall is coming, wait for the warranty to kick in and use it for the new HVAC system. good luck. |

We did just buy the house...and we are looking into the home warranty to see what we can do.
It still works...but the AC unit is leaking water all over and our tech said it wouldn't last through the end of summer. So, we're crossing our fingers and breaking out the fans just in case. I'm not buying anything until we run that home warranty to ground (probably doesn't cover coils or compressors). This is a 15 yr old crappy system that needs replaced. Even if the home warranty doesn't cover it...we'll be ok if we can wait through the winter and get something done in the spring. __________________ '71 FJ40

That is what I said....but the guy from Croppe Metcalfe was adamant that it was a leak. He said that there was just too much water.
However, if it was a leak....would it be cooling the house? I mean, my house is currently COLD. __________________ '71 FJ40

Water should only be coming from condensation, which is normal. You can get a few gallons on a good day. Our condensate pump runs a lot. There is no water anywhere else in the A/C system. If you have cold air, and you're unit isn't freezing up, what's the problem? Sure, it could be inefficient due to a number of factors, but if it seems to work, no problem. Save your money and call somebody better. We used Presidential. Of all the outfits we tried, they seemed the most competent. They installed a kick-ass Carrier for a great price (relative to other quotes we got). __________________ 1970 FJ40 (AKA "Big Red") 2007 FJ Cruiser (Black Diamond ) |

Dave,
Thanks, we fired them already. They were coming to our "new" house to try to get us on another contract...we declined. So, I will chill out about the A/C until the spring....and, I will keep the '40. I really feel silly for reacting like that.... __________________ '71 FJ40

DON'T SELL IT!!! You will regret it. Park it and cover it. Good 40's are getting harder to come by. __________________ 93 4Runner, 22RE, 5 speed, SAS w/Alcan springs, OME FJ80 Rear Springs, All Pro Links, 5.29 gears, ARB Locker front and rear, 35" MTR's. 06 4Runner Sport, 4.7 V8, Stock |

My neighbor had this happen and actually flooded half his basement and into my garage (townhome). It was so much water he thought it was the water supply line into the house and was getting ready to replace it to the tune of $1300. I told him to make sure it wasn't the condensation line and sure enough it was. PS- sorry, I meant to quote Herb |
