Clutch Master bolt is behind the brake booster

Take a look at this picture. The last bolt for my clutch master cylinder is partly behind my brake booster. Pardon the dumb question..but is easy to remove the brake booster to get to this bolt?

I just got my brakes (old drums) working great and I don't want to upset that applecart.

I have tried my 12mm wrench, but can't get the leverage or the grip on the bolt with all of the angles and components in the way. I need to get a socket over that bolt...but can't.

See if you can fit a six point closed end wrench over the bolt and tap it with a hammer to break it loose.

Can't get a closed end wrench around it...unless of course I pound the crap out of the booster to make room. You can see in the picture that I've pounded a bit on the booster to make a little room...but that is about as far as I think I should go with that.

Just so you don't feel too bad, I remember that particular bolt being a pain in the ass when we were parting a truck out. And that was after most everything else under the hood had been removed.

kroil. More kroil. then I think an air rachet.

So, why are you pulling the MC? Are you replacing it?

Is the bolt frozen or just hard to get to? When I was banging on that bolt, I wasn't too concerned with not tearing the head off. But it's as hard as you say to get to the bolt head, imagine how hard it's going to be to drill and re-tap.

Just be careful is all I'm sayin'. If it's frozen, try heat/kroil/heat/kroil. If it's just the angle, maybe try to get one of those off-set funny angle wrenches.

I am pulling the Clutch Master to replace it as my slave is leaking, so I'm just replacing both. This booster is just in the way.....

The bolt probably isn't frozen, just very hard to get too with a suitable wrench. I can get an open ended 12mm wrench on it...but then it just doesn't have the grip and slips. I tried hammering on the booster a bit to see if I could make enough room to get a closed end wrench around the bolt, but I got spooked and didn't want to trash the booster.

Maybe the off-set funny angle wrenches would work. Or, do they make a closed end wrench that isn't so thick that might fit in there?

Maybe a pair of vice grips?

I'm not sure of what's behind the booster, but I'd imagine it was just a paper gasket that seals the cab at the firewall. You may be able to just loosen the booster enough to get the six point closed end wrench over the nut. Try checking SOR's site for a diagram if you don't have an FSM.

Don't think I could get those back there....maybe. The problem is the components and firewall bracketing are all in the way...making any movement of larger wrenches, pliers, etc. almost impossible.

I'll try tonight....

Probably wouldn't hurt to start this thread again in the 40 series tech section to tap those who have dealt with this on your year cruiser.

Yep, good idea....

I just would rather not remove the brake booster and risk hosing something up. If removing the booster is easy and rather moron proof..then maybe I would tackle it.
