Rear Axle rebuild parts
I got the parts from cruiseroutfitters today.
2 bearings 1 box of seal(s)...I didn't look inside yet, but now I'm guessing there should be two seals in there. 2 differential gaskets. Since we'll be pulling the rear axles to get the diff out...won't I need a couple more gaskets that go behind the drums?? Doug __________________ '71 FJ40

If you're replacing both rear wheel seals and bearings, then yes, you are missing a rear axle seal. One rear axle seal and bearing per side. There are no gaskets behind the rear drums, only the rear axle seals.
Are your rear wheel seals leaking? Why are you replacing the rear seals/bearings just to change a diff out? __________________ '77 FJ40: HFS, 33's, Locked and Low'd

Dumb question - why are there two diff gaskets?

Cork is for rear cover, paper is for diff.

I've been told that since I'll be in there, and the truck is 36 years old..that I should replace those bearings. What do you think?? __________________ '71 FJ40

It would be great to just get this thing rolling, rather than waiting until late April....but I'm inclined to do the job right and replace those old bearings. Plus, having a tech day on it would be fun and informative. I mean, we get to get the welder out....how cool! My neighbors will be so confused.

Has there been a tech day scheduled on this? Without a press, R&R on the rear bearings is quite difficult. Machine shop time, or bfh time. The correct size pipe is fine for installing the new bearings. Who's R&Ring the bearings?

To be more clear....John ordered the SST for the bearings, the welder is just in case that doesn't work and we have to "put a bead" in the bearing race to get it out.

Am I behind the 8 ball, geezing, or has this been posted along with other upcoming event dates somewhere? I'd like to see the rear bearings done myself, never having done them.

Doug, Open up one of the bearing boxes, tear open the plastic bag and lets see what the bearing looks like. Also, open up the seal box to verify you have two seals in there... You will need one per side.

![]() That literally everything you need. There is one other paper gasket between the dust sheild and the axle shaft, but it only gets replaced when you are popping the studs out of your axleshaft, and even at that you don't really need the paper gasket. Your set...

Hey Kurt, thanks for the clarification. I'll call you tomorrow and order up the stuff for the front output bearing.

Hey Dan, Those bearings stay in the axle tubes making them a pain to pull out. They aren't like the mini truck rears that you have to press off the shafts. At least i think that's what your'e talking about.

Oh, gotcha, Ryan. That's why I wanted to see it done. Come to think of it, when John's axle were out at CMCC, I don't remember seeing the bearings on the axles. If a special puller is needed to pull them out, I guess new ones can just be tapped in?
Sounds like my silver slapper would pull them out? __________________ '77 FJ40: HFS, 33's, Locked and Low'd

Ryan is correct. The rear axle bearings stay in the axle tube and can be a pian to get out. I did the ones on my old 40 several years ago, and the bearing on the driver side broke apart while trying to pull it out while the one on the pass. side came out with out much trouble. I agee that if you are going to be tearing apart the rear axle and you still have old bearings and seals, go ahead and replace the old stuff. It's better than dealing with a bad bearing and/or seal on the trail.

Thanks for the clarification Dale and Ryan. Yes, I was mistakenly thinking that the rear bearings were like the mini truck. And sure, if you don't know the history of the rear bearings, I agree, replacement is best.

What is the ID and OD of that axle collar part? The piece in the center of the bearing.
