Progress...

Got my exhaust done this weekend, it turned out really well. I pretty much eyeballed the whole thing (the most i cut a peice of pipe was once) and it ended up running above the bottom of the frame all the way to a turndown.

Its 2" downpipe to a dynomax 2 into 1 with a 2 1/2" outlet, magnaflow cat, thrush muffler, and a turndown.

Ive got a whole other project going now, as lonnie bought himself a 83 cj-7. Its got some good booty fab but he got a screaming deal on it and we are gonna sling a D44 and a 9" under it. Its setup for a 350, TCI t-350, D300. We are gonna look into throwing a cruiser front end on it since then i could set him up with almost a whole axle and we could share spares.

If you end up getting the axle in the front before i do, let me know how it goes. I am about to put a set of mini truck axles under my jeep.

I think it may happen, because ive already got everything but the knuckles and the hubs, which im sure someone one here has. I might see if anyone has a set of histeer arms to get rid of for him.

Basically he wants to get into crawling and was like hey can you help me make this turn out right. Hes built a drag truck and knows his shit, hes just kinda new to a lot of offroad rig building.

If you were closer you should drop by and see what you think, its rough but its got a nice 1 peice flip forward front end, new tci trans, painless harness, autometer gauges, cage etc. He only payed 400 bucks and a beat nissan for it. All it needs to move is a 350. I think it has stock axles, what is stock for a 83? I think its an AMC rear, its got those exposed nuts on the axle ends.

Yeah i had the 30 pegged, i had just never seen an amc in person before so i was like thats a hmmmmm yeah i dont know.

His D44 is 8 lug, which would go well with a 14 bolt though.

BTW, the front driveshaft on it is around 1" solid round bar welded to the yoke. I think we need to put a motor in first, get the twin stick sorted out (one of the shifters wont engage in the case, i dont know which one it is) and go see what breaks first. And second.

yeah...that was a classic Cj front shaft (pretty much everything from 70-86') It was standar piece made to clear the pan when they used the autos (904,999,727,TH400s)
I have plenty of extras if needed. If you put 1 piece shafts in the 20...it could hold to a 35"...but not if it's wheeled hard. If it's Jeep 8 lug 44 front from the like of a J truck....it's the perfect width match to a SRW 14bolt.

the front driveshaft is 1 1/4 in. tube. It is suprisingly strong to transfer power, but doesn't like the weight of the vehicle on them.

On the t-case shifter problem. you can remove the little nipple-like tubes on the back of the case with a pair of pliers. Inside are the shifter rails. You can usually help them move (using an LFH not BFH). Those cases are very simple, you could always pull it apart and lube er up.

Hydro steer should be on it by new years, im gonna do some measurements for my tube and see if can get some time and go to norms and cut it up so i can take it home. I gotta put the ARP hub studs in, then find a decent winch. Hopefully i can also have some 30 splines before GSMTR.

On the jeep stuff, we got a new 350 in it last night and painted the tub and one peice front end.

The 350 has been 12.57 in a S10 so i dont think hes gonna have any horsepower issues.

Yeah, the plan is get everything together (the 300 shifts fine, it just needs to be running or moving a little to get both shifters to engage) and see what we can blow up. Right now we are trying to figure out some cheap wheels so he can play with it before we tear the axles out.

What size ujoint does the stock dana 300 yoke accept? Are there larger yokes available without going to 32 spline? Will the outputs be an issue with a 44 and either a 12 or 14 bolt?

Go to CAP and grab the front DS and out put off a waggie...it's a flat flange and DC shaft that you can cut down for the rear. 1310 on the rear of a 300.

I've got plenty of cheap jeep wheels if interested.

the u-joints should work for any 44, but not sure about any 12 or 14 bolt.

The question i was trying to ask was is he going to need 32 spline outputs with a little stronger axle.

BTW, does anybody have a source for a windshield for his heep, hes got a hard top to go with it but it looks pretty dumb with no windshield.

i have a windsheild that is ok to get by with for a while. the frame is rusty and the glass is good, but fogged around the edges(old glass) the frame was a replacement for my jeep after i layed on the drivers side. I will let the whole thing go for $50. I paid that for the frame with broken glass from the yard.

If he goes to 44's(axles) he won't have to change the yokes or anything. the u-joints are the same. even if the axle has a different yoke, the stock output yokes on the D300 are very strong(if they are the u-bolt style, not the strap style)

We got the heep running last night, holy shit its got a motor. The 300 is still shifting funny but we had fun burning the front wheels in the rain.

Im gonna pull my exhaust and fix the pinholes and then move on to measuring for the tube. Im starting to think SOA would be easier than all the cutting. We shall see.

I ordered a set of poly performances new 4340 birfs, they should be here in a couple of days.

Damn good deal, 200 bucks for a pair. They are made by the same company that makes the longfields.

Toyota Mini Truck & FJ 4340 Chromoly Birfields :: Poly Performance Axles :: Axles & Accessories :: Poly Performance Inc.

Ok, i figured i would update. Ive got both front fenders cut up for a 36-37" tire, including a big portion of the core support. I think im going to move the front body mount up because that seems to be the biggest limiter in uptravel at full lock, without moving it i dont see more than 2" uptravel. Im kinda shooting for the 3" area and bring the shock mounts up to get more downtravel out of my shocks, i feel like i could get more droop and still not drag my shocks over everything.

In case you guys never see the 60s section, here are old pics. Both sides are now cut out that much including the core support to where the body mount is. It looks pretty sweet with the mockup 38s though!
