bought a new guitar!

First one in just about 30 years!

This all started just before the Reunion. Plane reservations called for a stopover in Denver. I started worrying about one of my guitars getting 'lost' in the shuffle. Then I started thinking how I've risked beating them up on the trail for so long as well. Well I get to the shop about 10 minutes later and find a message from Butch that he's got me covered on a guitar for the Reunion.

So I call him back and he tells me about this Washburn he picked up on Ebay for something like $150 that's got a real sweet sound. I get down to Bonham and try this baby out and I AM IMPRESSED. Clean, deep resonance, low action, capos without distortion. He tells me about some really fancy one he's had his eye on, so I say fine, buy it and sell me this one! The old man wasn't goin for it, so my search started.

By the time I was back at the computer at home, he'd sent me a link to the Ebay seller he'd got his jem from. So I started bidding. And bidding. And losing. and bidding and losing. Again and again. 3 weeks and 11 auctions later, I had barely missed out on several nice guitars, maybe because I was too lazy to use a sniper bid, and maybe for other reasons.

So I left for Idaho on vacation. Took the laptop, bought a wi-fi thingy to plug in it. Bid on and lost 3 more guitars.

Now mind you, this whole time I've been real patient and conservative-like, only bidding on one guitar at a time, just in case.

So, about two weeks ago, I've got a bid out on a brand new Washburn that's a few hours from closing with a current bid at $91. I've got a max bid in at $125.00 that the seller can't see. I've already been outbid on two of these before in that range, so I'm not feeling particularly lucky. I decide to take my chances and bid on a second guitar, used, that comes with a case. Wife and I take off for dinner and when we come back, lo and behold, I am now the owner of TWO GUITARS!

Here's the new one:

Ironically, my wife told me a week or so before we left for Idaho that my daughter was thinking of taking up the guitar. Now mind you she's the only one in the family that hasn't already taken up a musical instrument, so this is good news to me regardless. So I just figured the Good Lord had made it so that I would get both of these guitars at the same time for a reason.

I let her try the new guitar the day after I got it. Sure enough, it was a little too hard for her to play. When I got the used one a few days later I checked it out, and sure enough, it had an easier action to work with. Problem solved.

IIRC, you said that was the one with the widest neck, ergo the easiest to get your fingers all on to the fretboard. Interestingly enough, the second Washburn I got, the one I said I would prolly end up giving my daughter, also turned out to have a slightly wider fretboard.

She came over Sunday and tried them both again. She agreed it was easier to work with. It went home with her.

I'll be looking forward to trying out that millenium guitar next March.

So who's got the groovy egg chair left over from the 60's? Does it have the 8track in it?

So I finally took this 'gem' out for it's big debut at the 45 run last weekend. Handed it straight off to greenfox for a test, and he got this quizical look on his face. I took it back and found out that all it would do is BUZZ! Darn thing warped on me between the heat of the drive up and the cool mountain air.

Calico John ended up cutting me some paper wedges from a pack of Camels to put under the bridge to make the dang thing semi-playable for the weekend. Now I guess I gotta learn me a bit about straightening out guitars!
