Looking for a shop to setup gears

I'm looking for a shop or someone who knows their stuff to setup my gears. Finding a place in San Antonio would be nice but Austin isn't too far from me.

On a side note, I'm re-using my bearings so I didn't bother with any "install kits," which means I didn't get any new shims. I assume the shims from Toyota will work just fine, someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Thrash

I stopped by Thrash Differential and Axle Service today. Charlie Thrash is the owner and whom I spoke with. He owns a fairly sizable automotive general repair facility next door (Thrash Automotive), though his personal corner in the rear has high po sitting all over the place; Vettes, Bikes, Hot Rods, and Muscle cars.

I spoke to him in the morning about doing some welding and he invited me in for this afternoon, but his doctors appointment went over. I'm going back tomorrow. The other guy in the shop said there would be no problem in setting up my Cruiser for 5.29's. It's in what they specialize.

About a mile south of 410 on West ave. Charlie's cell # is 421-5060.

Thanks! I'll check them out next week when I get back from the TTORA takeover.

Brett, on a side note, BrettinSA mentioned somthing about getting the San Antonio LC guys together soon. I'm going to guess maybe after the 4th.

Toyota Territory Off Road Association. Here is the link to the event: http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68758

TTORA is inline with TLCA etc. You should grab your camping stuff and come out! TTORA is free to join and there is still spots open for the Takeover.

So you got 5.29's? I heard they have been back ordered for a while.

No 5.29's yet, but it's nice to know where to go when I do. Hopefully I will be able to find some when it is time.

I'll check the link.

Well if you want to come out and do some wheeling give me a call. I'm heading out there with my dad late tomorrow afternoon. I'm taking my mini truck, the LC is striped for a power inverter install right now. Infact that meeting you missed last month was the central TTORA chapter. Hopefuly we can get a LC group going around here. Or I need to just drive my truck up to Austin, it's been almost 2 yrs.

I just emailed Chris from TTORA about the event. I think I can probably make it. I still have to get my exhaust hanger welded up which I should have done tomorrow morning after I drop my wife at the airport. I was over at Thrash's this morning just getting ready to start when lightning struck and blew up their transformer. My truck isn't 100% but I figure I can probably get it together for a weekend.

I'll buzz you up tomorrow.

Were exactly is this shop in Bulverde and would you consider them to be top notch?

I'm really paranoid when letting a "stranger" work on anything on my trucks, more less the gears. I might just pick up some of the yellow paint and setup the gears myself, though it might take some time playing with the shims to get it contacting well. I think with my dad's help and his runout gauge to check the backlash we can get it setup. The only thing I would need is an adjuster tool for the carrier bearing nut on the locker side. -- That is another thing that I don't trust a typical shop to have and I'd be very pissed if they do the hammer and chisel to set the carrier preload.

I'm confident in any of my work and the only issue I forsee doing the gears myself is it taking much much longer. For time sake I'm going to have a shop to do them, however had I done them myself I would have just had a tech look at the pattern for a final say.

I'd really like to know more about this guy up 281, I know the bridge you're talking about. I'd like to check out the place this week but with the 4th think they will be open?
