Performance Fluids

Our vehicles are expensive, and I recommend using only the best synthetics in the engine and drivetrain. My choice is Royal Purple or Redline synthetic oils. Check them out here:

Royal Purple Motor Oil

Red Line Oil

I really like Royal Purple too. Two others that I highly recommend is Mobil1 and Amsoil.

Cool More information about fluids (m)

One of the MOST important topics of discussion has to be oil, from engine oil to gear oil...what is it, what is best, which one to use, viscosity, etc.

Not that it has anything to do with the subject of oil but humans and dinosaurs never existed at the same period in time. Humans didn’t come along until long after the dinosaurs were wiped out by a cosmic collision. Stuff like this irks me.

You sure it was cosmic and not some alien invasion to go on a hunt?

Well I wasn't actually there to witness the event but the evidence is pretty strong and is easy to identify even in our current point in time.

However, Alien hunters would be pretty cool. OMG....they could return to hunt us. Or, maybe they already have!

Jen and I were hunting for aliens on our "Out of this World" road trip to pick up my 80. We went through Roswell and Marfa and came back with a Visitor. She may have pics...

On the topic of those synthetic fluids, I ended up with the purple stuff when we did my birfs. It was three minutes till closing and the guy at oreilly's was grumpy that we skated in so late. He said they were all the same just pick one.

Also, Costco has the Mobil1 on sale with the new passport. I was wondering if I could use the one they carry if it is the same weight. The Mobil1 I put in at our wrench day was for high mileage vehicles but they don't have that one at Costco.

I had an interesting expedition to Roswell in the early 90s in my old Nissan Pathfinder. I took my mom along, and my dog and we had a great time at the ufo museums etc... However on the way back through the hill country I lost my brakes and had to rely on gearing down and using ever so slightly my emergency brake to slow up. I made it back..... wow what a scary situation. The HILL COUNTRY!! Coming down through Fredericksburg etc.. wowoowowow....

I have run Mobil 1 in the past and it's good oil. I do prefer the RP and Redline as I said, I think it has slicker properties, and probably a bit more heavy duty in application. Amsoil is good too.

After some study, I have decided to switch all my fluids to Amsoil.

Here's a nice paper on a whole group of the more popular gear oils, and Amsoil out performed even my two usual favorites.

http://www.performanceoiltechnology....te%20Paper.pdf

Am I suprised? Yes...... Amsoil has been around for years, and nothing much said about them. However I find that they haven't been just sitting around making the same old products.

Motul is a French-German company that makes oil for extreme conditions( racing, desert, mountains) They use Mo in some of their products in combination with other "goodies" to make the oil resistant to extreme changes in temperature and internal forces....it really works.....Another excellent product is the lub Molly synthetic( german) oil..works great too . I had use Amsoil, Red Line, Royal purple, elf and mobil 1...Lubry Molly or Motul are better products.

I think I need that. Brett and Shawn convinced me at our last meeting that my 80 is going to blow up this summer when it gets hot.

I'd just make sure you have a transmission cooler, and as well have maybe Toyota do a system flush on your radiator and you should be fine with those things. Then maybe an AC recharge. That should make you good for a few years.

I figured they were Australian since it the company brings up a .au when you go there. Could be an Australian distributor though.

I figure it like this, you can only get so good, and then you are paying for miniscule bits of improvement. The Amsoil tests blew away two products I like on a couple of tests, and those are well known products - Redline and Royal Purple. I have used these oils for years in the differentials. I am switching to Amsoil because the performance is a drastic improvement, especially in a couple of areas over the other brands cited. Nobody's ever heard of Motul over here, and I am skeptical of their performance unless a documented head to head lab test is done against other known brands.

Skeptical is good, but I can tell you by experience (crossing the Andes and the Atacama Desert) Motul performed better than Amsoil....I have tried both in extreme conditions, Motul maintained my Hj75 cooler. I think experience in the field( landcruiser in the middle of nowhere) kills lab test.
Amsoil is easier to get,Motul is not; so availability kills Motul,,,cheers

I am sure there is definitely a good comparison between lab tests and real world. When I worked at Harris on microwave transceivers, we put the product through gruelling conditions in test (extreme heat, extreme cold, humidity, arid etc ) so we knew they could handle whatever mother earth dished out.

Not discounting your claim, but if everyone jumped ship to a new product as soon as someone said it was 'best', we would all be taking out a mortgage on our house to pay for all the oil we bought over and over. Where can some real world information be had on Motul?

I have used Redline and Royal Purple both over the years. Redline is also race oil, and is heavy duty, and yet Amsoils tests proved they had the better product under stress.

Where are you from anyway?

LCs4Life - As you know, I run Amsoil in everything but the tranny. I purchased a 1 year "preferred customer" Amsoil membership at a gun show awhile back. It allows me to purchase Amsoil at the dealer price for a year. I have seen an Amsoil dealer at every gunshow I have been to and they can sell you this membership for $20. If you need something till then, we can get together on me ordering it for you.

The idea here is helping fellow cruiser owners in getting better products for the vehicle ( base on reliable data or experience), not create a polemic. I used to work as a Mechanical Engineer for BP in the Orinoco Valley (Colombia-Brazil). everybody change the TLC fliuds to Motul or LubMolly because they worked better.

Awesome! Thank you. Yes, for the 80. The 40 only gets driven about 10 miles a month

When I had a diesel Mercedes and my wife and an older 5 series BMW, all we used were the LubMolly products. The Europeans love them for their cars. Very good stuff.

The shockproof is awesome. I use it in my motorcycle (Indian with a big V-Twin engine and 5 speed tranny). Shockproof in the trans, Redline oil in the V-Twin. My Indian puts out about 97 hp to the rear wheel and can smoke a tire as well as pull a wheelie in 2nd gear... done it
