savoirs on the Rubicon
I was on the Rubicon August 14 with my 72 FJ40. I met a guy at Buck Island Saturday evening in a nicely set up Tacoma who was pretty much SOL with a blown rear pinion and cracked xfer case due to a less than ideal straight axle conversion. He JB welded the xfer case so at least he had front wheel drive.
As usual the campground was pretty full so I figured someone would help him out, but I offered anyway. Come Sunday morning I hear lots of V8s and buggies powering their way out until the camp is basically deserted. I took a quart of gear oil to his "camp" but he wasn't there so I thought he got a ride out and was going to get a 3rd member. A while later he came into my camp and wanted to know if I would still help tow him out. I agreed, even though my FJ has open diffs and the stock 6 cylinder engine. When I was walking back to his Tacoma to see if he was ready to go, I met a group of people with a kid and baby who were already cheerfully towing him out. It was probably around 3:00 PM. The tow rig was a set-up late model 4runner. He dragged him out with a too-short broken tow strap with such little drama he made it look easy. By the time we got to inspiration point it was around 11:00pm. No one was complaining or stressing out, no one was asking for anything in exchange, it was just pure and simple helping a total stranger in need. It was a real eye opener to see how the hard core buggies and wheelers didn't care, while a family oriented group with kids in a Samurai, Jeep Wrangler, Bronco and 4runner would go out of their way to help someone out. http://christianfourwheelers.com/for...hp?topic=504.0 Kudos to: Andy Kennedy Danny & Jeanne Shawn & Tina Karl Wise |

Great story right up to the part that you start running someone else down Christian four wheeler…
This is what I have not ever understood about people that think that they are doing something to just be generous, and then spout off about how much better they are then someone else, or some other group of people for doing something that is common sense. You could have easily pointed out that you were a part of a group that helped a total stranger out, but no, you had to add the sideways bullshit of putting a group of people down. You are no better than those you talk down about, good act and all pal. On many occasions over the eighteen-plus years that I have been four wheeling, I have helped multiple people (towed, repaired their vehicle, given them parts, fuel, etc) and not received so much as a thank you from some. At the end of the day, it does not really matter. I do not need to get on some public forum and spew negative shit about other people to make myself feel or look better. Christian four wheelers eh? Good luck! -Steve |
